The album takes the title from the first trace, "The Devil", written by Nick The Nightfly after having seen the film "Ray" (by Taylor Hackford) that it tells the life Ray Charles (splendidly interpreted by Jamie Foxx). The rhythm "bright" united to the sound "light", the text of the passage they are contrasted to that hides an accusation towards the consumerism of our days. "The Devil" it is marvelously interpreted by Nick in duet with Sarah Jane Morris, that perfectly represents "diavoletta" that she lives in each of us, giving life to the temptations typical of the daily life. "The Devil" it is a trip inside of me, inside my past. and every time that the listening returns me to the mind my godfather that often said: "Follow your heart and do better than yours, the devil thinks about the rest! For this disk Nick The Nightfly has used some collaboration of the MONTERCARLO NIGHTS you/he/she Orchestrates directed by Gabriele Comeglio, the orchestra picks up some of the most prestigious present names on the Italian musical scene; it deals with session man and soloist of undisputed value with a great orchestral experience to the shoulders. To the manager Gabriele Comeglio (sax) they are added: Emilio Soana (before trumpet), Ubaldo Busco (sax), Maurice Meggiorini (sax), Paul Barbieri (sax), Sergio Orlandi (trumpet), Pippo Colucci (trumpet), Angel Rolando (trombone), Mauro Parodi (trombone), Tony Arco (battery), Mark Esposito (low), Claudio Angeleri (plain) and Alexander Gallo (guitar). The orchestra is born from a' idea of Nick The Nightfly with the patronage of Radio Mountain Charles, of its publisher Alberto Hazan under the direction of Gabriele Comeglio. The thanks "special" of Nick they go to the friends Sarah Jane Morris that it sings in "The Devil" and "Can't Buy Me Love" and to Paul Fresu for the solo of flügelhorn in "Berchidda Blues" (passage that Nick has written for him). The disk has been recorded from Cooper near the study Mechanical Shops in Milan of Mauro Pagani. The voices of Nick and Sarah, have been recorded from Alexander Gallo to the Digital Lake Studios. The album has been mixato from Carmine Dj near the Digital Lake Studios. The editing has been submitted to Alexander and Alberto Gallo and mastering to Pietro Caramelli (near the Nautilus in Milan). The executive production of the album is Nick's The Nightfly, the artistic production is of Nick The Nightfly and Gabriele Comeglio and all the arrangements of Gabriele Comeglio. The graphic project of the CD brings the signature of Mark Tonelli and Cristina Matrone, the photos inside the disk are Henry's You Briola of CameraScreen, the office stamps it is edited by Words & Outskirts, the distribution is edited by Edel.

The Serenade in B flat major "Gran Partita" K 361, completed in 1781, is without doubt one of Mozart's most beautiful instrumental works. Together with the two large-scale works in the same style in E flat major and C minor, also written for winds, the "Gran Partita" belongs to the category of "serious" orchestral serenades in light "entertainment" style, such as the Serenata notturna and the "Haffner" Serenade.
The Gran Partita war begun in Munich in 1781 and completed in Vienna. It consists of eight movements. The calm opening largo is followed by a powerful by a powerful allegro molto. The subsequently beginning menuet with its two trios leads up to the famous adagio, its temperament vacillating between yearning and plaintive love. Romantic yearning is characteristic of the fifth adagio movement, followed by a burlesque allegretto in minor, as well as of the andantino with six imaginative variations. A rondo of youthful vivacity completes the work.
During the time when "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" was written Mozart was also working on "Don Giovanni". The four short movements, which are among Mozart's simplest and loveliest compositions, enjoy a popularity today which far exceeds that of his other works. It seems, however, that the work was not performed again during the composer's lifetime. Its popularity today is also a result of the fact that it is scored for strings alone and can be played with a minimun of means.

Given that this is one of the most popular works of classical music of all time, I'd heard Vivaldi's 4 Seasons so often that I had no interest in hearing them again. Ever. But when I got this disc as a gift and popped it in, I was pleasantly surprised. This recording, despite being played on period instruments, is not for baroque purists. The dynamic contrasts are incredible, but tend to be on the hacking side in the louder sections. The group freely moves back and forth between ponticello and tasto, and many of the tempi are absurdly fast or slow compared to your average performance. Many of the movements have little gimmicks, most of which are interesting, but unsuccessful, such as the "barking dog" in the slow movement of Spring, an accurate description from a reviewer below. Onofri's violin solos are technically excellent, though occasionally gritty and often rhythmically quirky... the end result is that I love this music again, a change for the better. For an introduction to Vivaldi or period instrument performances, stay away. For a 4 Seasons that will revitalize you and forever alter the way you conceive of the piece, this is an essential recording.

In this day and age of unspontaneous music making, even in the fields of pop and jazz music, Peter Pettinger and I for this disc, at least, were totally unrehearsed. And I hope that the spontaneity which arose because of this has more than made up for the lack of rehearsal. I, certainly, can imagine having spent far more time and worry on a worse disc ... but let me tell you how the disc came to be in the first place:
To be honest, I suppose I should say I am more well known as a classical musician, and it was in this guise that Peter Pettinger and I went happily to the pub having just finished recording the Elgar sonata and pieces four hours ahead of schedule. After a drink we both felt like playing again and Brian Couzens (our producer) was game enough to come and record us. My years playing with Stephane Grappelli and in clubs in New York have left me with an insatiable appetite for playing jazz (and, incidentally, any other kind of music) and since Peter Pettinger is such a tremendous jazz pianist we decided to play a few standards. Here is what we came up with, completely unrehearsed and unedited. As one of the most successful classical performers of his time, violinist Nigel Kennedy's genre-defying music helped him achieve a level of fame typically reserved for pop stars. A native of Brighton, England, he studied music at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at Juilliard; his debut recording, Elgar Violin Concerto, appeared in 1984, shortly followed by Nigel Kennedy Plays Jazz. In the years to follow, Kennedy collaborated not only with the more traditional likes of Riccardo Muti and the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and Andre Previn, but also with pop figures including Paul McCartney and Kate Bush; his fame reached new heights with the 1989 release of his recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, which went as high as number three on the U.K. pop charts and went on to sell well over a million copies. In 1992, neck surgery forced Kennedy to retire for several years; when he resurfaced with 1996's Kafka, he performed his own compositions for the first time, broadening his scope to include not only classical music but also elements of Celtic, rock, and jazz. The Jimi Hendrix tribute The Kennedy Experience followed in 1999.

"Although Tigran Mansurian has turned to the string quartet medium many times in his career, he has preserved only those mature works that reflect his deepest feelings and speak in a private language of mourning and loss. The chief influences behind the String Quartet No. 1, "In memory of David Chandschian" (1983-1984) and the String Quartet No. 2, "In memory of Eduard Chagagortzian" (1984) are evidently the quartets of Bartók and Shostakovich, though Mansurian has developed a quasi-religious strain derived from Armenian composer Komitas, which tends to make his works resemble the late twentieth century music of Arvo Pärt in its harmonic simplicity and chaste modality. The understated performances on this 2005 ECM New Series CD by the Rosamunde Quartet are sensitively attuned to Mansurian's elegiac mood, which is lovingly sustained in the many slow movements. Seekers of conflict or active, energetic music will have to content themselves with the Allegretto and the Agitato of the String Quartet No. 1, since the tempos of the String Quartet No. 2 are either Andante or Larghetto, and the short Testament (2004), which closes the disc, is Lento throughout, and all these movements are for the most part subdued. With its overcast shadings and dark expressions, this album is best suited for quiet listening and best appreciated by patient listeners. ECM's sound quality is superb."

Before the 1st note of their 2006 debut album together, Feeling Good, was even recorded, Randy Crawford and Joe Sample knew that they would have to do a second one. And given their shared history of a musical culture rich in gospel, jazz and rhythm and blues it seemed natural that their second album would pull from the bluesier side of that culture.
Amongst the tracks on the new album are versions of the Edith Piaf 'No Regrets' 'Everyday I Have The Blues', originally recorded by The Count Basie Orchestra. 'Respect Yourself', 'Just One Smile' originally from 'Dusty In Memphis' album, and 'Starting All Over Again'.
Randy and Joe first met over 30 years ago. 3 years later Joe wrote 'Street Life' for Randy followed by 'Someday I'll Fly Away', 'Danceland', 'When Your Life Was Low' all additional hits for Randy over the years.

There are many influences which give this Denton based band their own unique sound, which would best be described as hard-driving country. Live performances by the Mo Robson Band will definitely bring a crowd to its feet, keep a dance floor packed and leave the crowd wanting more.

Over the last seven years the MRB has been consistently touring Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, playing clubs, festivals/fairs and rodeos, as well as corporate and private functions. They have performed with national, regional and local acts of various genres.

The Mo Robson Band is made up Mo Robson, Jake Jackson, Kevin Poe, and Kevin Miller. Robson and Jackson started the band in December of 1999. In March 2000 the duo began playing acoustic shows at various venues around Dallas. A few weeks later the band found a drummer and bass player to form a full band. After several months of performing, the original bass player was asked to leave and was replaced on Labor Day 2000 by Kevin Poe. In April of 2001, the bands drummer decided to move on to other ventures, and was replaced by long time friend Kevin Miller. The addition of Miller was the last and the members have played every show together since.

With its fourth studio outing, OVERCOME, the Massachusetts-based metalcore act All That Remains turns a page by replacing longtime producer Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch Engage) with Jason Suecof, who is best known for his work with Trivium. The result is a more dynamic album that ranges from the pounding opener, "Before the Damned," to the surprisingly sensitive closing ballad, "Believe in Nothing."

On July 21, 2008, two tracks from the new album - Before the Damned and Relinquish - made their debut on the band's MySpace profile. Commenting on the tracks, vocalist Philip Labonte stated, "This represents the heavier side of ATR. Last time we did this we put up 'The Weak Willed' and we feel like it's a bit of a tradition to really kick you in the nuts when we first show off new stuff! So here is the heaviest stuff we came up with for 'Overcome.'" Chiron made its debut on August 11, 2008 on the band's MySpace. The song is the first single from the album, with a behind-the-scenes shoot up and the official music video up on YouTube.

Two of the album's tracks, "Two Weeks," and "Chiron," were made available as downloadable content for Rock Band on September 9, 2008. The tracks are exclusive to Rock Band for one week before the album is released.

The song "Two Weeks" was added to the band's MySpace page on September 08, 2008 to help promote the release of the song pack on Rock Band. It will be the album's second single with a video being filmed for it.

The album debuted at #16 on the Billboard 200.

John 5, born John William Lowery in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, on July 31, 1971, is an American guitarist. His stage name was bestowed upon him back in 1998 when he joined rock group Marilyn Manson as their guitarist taking over from Zim Zum (Timothy M. Linton). He is currently the guitarist for Rob Zombie.

He is also a solo artist having recorded four guitar albums: "Vertigo" (2004), "Songs For Sanity" (2005), "The Devil Knows My Name" (2007) and "Requiem" (2008). He also works as a staff writer for Chrysalis Records, working with artists such as Avril Lavigne, Garbage, Meat Loaf and FeFe Dobson.

With his backing band The Rainbirds providing above-average alt-country accompaniment, Collins delves into introspection without ever becoming boring, cliche, or maudlin.

While the album’s titular song is musically kind of a drag despite its pointed lyrics, the rest of the tracks are keepers, especially the bitter “Unapology”. While some Americana bands tend toward the shallow side on their lyrics, Austin Collins proves that you can have both style and substance in abundance on an alt-country record.

Tulsa native and former NBA star Wayman Tisdale returns to the spotlight with his eighth release, "Rebound,” featuring joyful, laid-back grooves anchored by melodic bass guitar leads. And what a journey it is.

Tracks such as "Throwin' It Down” (featuring Darren Rahn) and "One on One” announce the former hoopster is back on the court. The best track, surprisingly enough, is Keith's rendition of the Barry White classic "Never Gonna Give You Up.” Keith sounds like a true Barry White protege. The collaboration covers Tisdale's quota to include at least one old-school song on his albums. Tisdale's reinvigoration and sense of purpose is felt from beginning to end, but most of all, Tisdale says on "Rebound,” "I Hope You Feel It Too.”

Note from yLe: Since this release and review, Tisdale recently lost a leg due to the bone cancer. He was one great hoops player for Oklahoma University and had a 12-season professional career with the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns.

Emmitt is well-known as a terrific mandolinist, and here he's joined by folks like Chris Pandolfi and Andy Hall of the Infamous Stringdusters, Tim O'Brien, Allison Brown, Darrell Scott, Stuart Duncan, and a number of others. It would be practically shocking if all these people could gather in one room and not come out with a great record. In fact, the album is an excellent effort from Emmitt and his numerous collaborators.

In addition to the great bluegrass influence of much of the record, there's also the cooled-out reggae rhythm of "Beat of the World", where Duncan's fiddle and Emmitt's mandolin marry the island groove with a little down home country, before Tyler Grant's electric guitar drives it home. There's also the Cajun-infused country song "Get 'er Rolling", which is one of the disc's best highlights. It's this level of fusion that keeps the record interesting.

Jamgrass fans will appreciate the long Grateful Dead-esque jam at the tail end of "Take the Highway", which shows clear influence from the classic bluegrass-rock jam band. Folks who appreciate Emmitt's incredible instrumental skills will appreciate his duetting with Ronnie McCoury on "Cloud City", one of the finest moments on the record.

Emmitt has, indeed, been on a long road since his career began more than two decades ago. Long Road is an excellent testament to the grace and musicianship he's provided throughout his career.

Born June 2nd 1984 in Hull, Quebec (Canada), Mike Larock never really had it easy. Like many artists, Mike had a rough life. His father was a musician but not the most respected.

Mike was put in a foster home when he was 9 due to his Mother's drug addiction. When Mike was able to return to his mother at age 10, she gave him a acoustic guitar as a welcome home present. She considered this the perfect gift due to the fact that Mike was always a singer since a tender age and music seemed to be a real passion for him.

Later in life, Mike received an e-mail invitation for a band contest in Beloeil, Quebec. In the spring of 2007, Marc-Andre Duguay, Mike Bilodeau, John Charette and Stefan accompanied Mike Larock at his first competition ever. Mike, at the audition show finished in first place and moved on to the semi-finals. He then won first place again and moved on to the finals. He competed all in all against 80 very talented bands and finished second place which won him $500 cash, a trophy to hold on to for life and he opened the show for “Les cowboys fringants (top selling artists in Quebec) on August 11, 2007 at the Festival de Beloeil in front of more than 25,000 people.

Mike has gone from a young confused musician to a professional. His matchless and dominant voice will make you ask for more every time. “To me music is what the world could never go without; everything I do now is for music. It is truly my passion and my biggest desire. I’ve worked so hard to get where I am, but I could of never of done it without Chap, John and Stefan who have been there since day one. All I want is to do what I love the most, and hopefully inspire others as well.”

Released the week of B.B. King's 80th birthday, 80 is a star-studded duets album, the first B.B. released since 1997's Deuces Wild. It was recorded in a variety of locations in the spring of 2005 and features a variety of guest artists, ranging from the familiar (Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Bobby Bland) to the unsurprising (Billy Gibbons, Mark Knopfler, Elton John, Sheryl Crow) to the frankly bewildering (John Mayer, Daryl Hall, Gloria Estefan). Unfortunately, the material isn't quite as wide-ranging - in fact, it leans toward the overly familiar, with a pleasant, thoroughly bland version of "The Thrill Is Gone" with Eric Clapton sadly living up to its title. There are a couple other bum tracks - most notably the turgid slow blues "There Must Be a Better World Somewhere," which drags on for an interminable seven minutes, or a full six minutes longer than needed to prove that sultry blues is not Gloria Estefan's forte - but for the most part, 80 plays better than it reads on paper. Most of it is solid, straight-ahead big band blues, firmly within B.B.'s comfort zone and sounding appropriately comfortable - not as in boring, but warm, relaxed, and friendly, whether he's playing with old friends like Bobby Bland or with John Mayer, who acquits himself well as a guitarist, even if his voice is overwhelmed by B.B.'s towering presence. There are couple of nice little surprises along the way, such as how "Ain't Nobody Home" with Daryl Hall works up a nice soulful groove or how Sheryl Crow reveals that she's a convincing blues singer (there are also some unpleasant surprises, as on "Tired of Your Jive," an otherwise fine track that's derailed by the realization that Billy Gibbons' voice has been torn to shreds, leaving a phlegmy mess behind), but the best moments come from the old guard of the British Invasion. Roger Daltrey proves that he's singing better than ever with "Never Make Your Move Too Soon," Elton John and his house band really cook on a terrific "Rock This House," but it's Van Morrison who steals the show with "Early in the Morning," a clean but down-and-dirty version of the standard. It's the best thing here, but it's unfortunate that it kicks off the album, since it suggests that this might be a harder-hitting blues album than normal from B.B. It's not - it's a slick, stylish, professional record, one that's actually a little more straightforward than he's been at any time since, well, Deuces Wild. Coming after some truly interesting records over the last few years, the predictability of 80 is a bit of a disappointment, but there's still a bunch of good stuff to hear, and, no matter how you look at it, for B.B. to be recording and still sounding vital at 80 is a remarkable thing even if the album that commemorates his birthday falls short of the remarkable itself. ~ Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine ~

Across the Universe is a 2007 musical film directed by Julie Taymor. It was released in the United States on October 12, 2007. The script is based on an original story credited to Taymor, Dick Clement, and Ian La Frenais that incorporates 33 compositions written by members of The Beatles. The plot relates the interweaving stories of several characters set against the backdrop of the turbulent 1960s. The arc of the storyline spans from the early innocent part of the decade to the politically-charged later years of the decade. The film's end credits identify a total of thirty-three separate Beatles compositions featured in the film, either in their entirety or in part. All of these songs were written between 1963 and 1970 by the members of The Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr) and recorded by The Beatles. Twenty-nine of them are compositions that are officially credited to the songwriting partnership of Lennon/McCartney. Three are credited to George Harrison. One title ("Flying") is a 1967 composition credited to all four members of the Beatles (Lennon-McCartney-Harrison-Starr). Interscope Records has released three variations of soundtrack albums from the film — a standard edition and two deluxe editions. The standard edition contains 16 tracks from the film soundtrack, although "Let It Be" is shortened, missing the third verse. The first version of the deluxe edition features 31 tracks — all of the vocal performances and one of the three instrumental tracks. In the US this 31-track version is available solely at the Best Buy retail chain and in a digital version via iTunes, while in Europe it is available at other retail outlets. A second version of the deluxe edition is available at other retail outlets and digital download suppliers. The second version differs from the 31-track version in that it omits two tracks ("Why Don't We Do It On The Road?" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"). The song "It Won't Be Long" was released as a single on iTunes on September 11, 2007. On October 15, 2007 – October 17, 2007, and again on October 22, 2007 – October 23, 2007, the 31-track deluxe edition was the #1 downloaded album on iTunes. The soundtrack includes seven songs from The Beatles (also known as The White Album), five from Magical Mystery Tour, five from Abbey Road, four from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, three from With The Beatles, two from A Hard Day's Night, two from Let It Be, one from Help!, one from Rubber Soul, and three other singles.

A dramatic vocalist who was born in France but sings in impeccable and unaccented English, Elisabeth Kontomanou is best known in Europe as both a singer and an actress. She has visited New York regularly and along the way has worked with Michel Legrand, Mike Stern, Toots Thielemans, and Jean-Michel Pilc, among others. Kontomanou has a powerful voice and is a fine jazz singer. On Back to My Groove, she performs Gustav Karlström's inventive arrangements to nine of her songs and two numbers from her sidemen. In addition to her impressive singing and the fresh material, some of which sounds like it could have been a standard in the '60s or '70s, Back to My Groove is of strong interest due to the instrumentation. Most selections utilize not only a rhythm section but the Quatuor Elysee String Quartet, a few horns (soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome is well featured) and a harpist. While there are some thoughtful performances, it is the more high-powered pieces, which include some challenging writing for the strings, that are of the greatest interest. Kontomanou gives one the impression that she could sing anything, making Back to My Groove a strong introduction to her music.

Along Came a Spider is Alice Cooper's 25th studio album, which follows his 2005 studio album Dirty Diamonds. It was released on July 28th 2008 in Europe and on July 29th in North America through Steamhammer Records/SPV GmbH and is Cooper's highest charting album since 1991's Hey Stoopid, charting at #53 in the US and #31 in the UK.

The album had originally been marked for release in 2007, but problems with producer scheduling and a busy touring schedule caused it to be delayed a year. A number of songs and demos for the album were prepared and short listed during 2007, and further recording and writing work took place on the album in February 2008. In an interview with Billboard Cooper stated that the album was 75% done as of April 18th, 2008.

Slash and Ozzy Osbourne perform as guests on two tracks on the album.

Gianluigi Trovesi has doubtlessly been influenced by African-American musicians from Armstrong and Ellington to Bird and Ornette. Yet the improvisational style coined in America is just one of many musical idioms the eclectic Trovesi has collected and combined during the course of his career. One also hears in his writing and playing influences ranging from Gregorian chants to Baroque fugues, from Bel Canto arias to the traditional dances and folk songs of his native Bergamo region, from the cherished brass band legacy that began bringing grand opera to the Italian masses to the work of 20th-century innovators like Stravinsky, Bartók and Zappa.
"Dedalo", an outstanding collaboration between Trovesi and Germany's renowned WDR Big Band, features brilliantly orchestrated and executed versions of Trovesi "classics" that were previously recorded in smaller formations. Although Trovesi spent 15 years as a member of the RAI Radio Big Band in Milan, this project is the first time that he arranged and directed music for an ensemble featuring the "classic" big band instrumentation. The WDR Big Band's tight ensemble playing on this recording makes it clear why an invitation to perform with them is one of the most coveted opportunities available on the international jazz scene today. Taking full advantage of the instrumental resources at their disposal, Gianluigi Trovesi, Corrado Guarino and Fulvio Maras wrote lush arrangements that mine the rich harmonic and melodic nuances that were just waiting inside Trovesi's compositions to be ingeniously developed.

Starflowers is the fascinating debut recording from Norwegian vocalist and kantele player Sinikka Langeland. The album is a brilliant confluence of folk music, sung poetry and Nordic improvisation. A folk singer from Finnskogen, Norway's `Finnish forest' land, Langeland explores in her work the relationship between man and nature. All of the texts on the album are derived from the poetry of Hans Børli (1918-89), a lumberjack whose poetry is alive with his experiences of the Norwegian forests. On Starflowers, Sinikka is joined by four fellow Scandinavians: Norway's Arve Henriksen (trumpet) and Trygve Seim (saxophones), Sweden's Anders Jormin (double-bass) and Finland's Markku Ounaskari (percussion). Henriksen, Seim and Jormin are veterans of numerous ECM jazz recordings. Born in 1961 to a Norwegian father and Finnish mother, Sinikka Langeland has drawn upon both sides of her cultural heritage. The instrument she plays is Finnish, a 39 string kantele or `table harp.' After growing up around classical music, Sinikka became interested in folk music in her teens and at age 20 began researching rune songs, incantations, old melodies from Finland and Karelia, as well as little known medieval ballads and religious folk songs. Since the early 1990s, she has been working and recording with jazz musicians as part of her ensembles.

John Pizzarelli salutes composer Richard Rodgers with this songbook including a dozen of his works. The vocalist/guitarist is accompanied by his trio, with Larry Fuller replacing Ray Kennedy, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, and drummer Tony Tedesco. Pizzarelli adds a personal touch to “;I Like to Recognize the Tune”; by altering Lorenz Hart's lyrics a bit, while also scatting up a storm in unison with his guitar. Bucky Pizzarelli is an added guest and soloist for “;It's Easy to Remember”; an intimate duet with the vocalist playing rhythm. Cesar Camargo Mariano takes over at the piano for the breezy bossa nova setting of “;Happy Talk”; Arranger Don Sebesky wrote the charts for the six tracks and a quartet of brass and reeds, highlighted by the snappy scoring of “;The Lady Is a Tramp”; recalling Pizzarelli's previous Telarc salute to Frank Sinatra (Dear Mr. Sinatra, in which he trades fours scatting with each of the horns). This release is a little short in the CD era, clocking in at just over 43 minutes, but there's never a dull moment.

The year 2008 might have been a slightly early point in time to release expanded editions of the first several Radiohead albums, so Capitol greased the reissue pipeline with The Best Of, a 17-track disc with a track list that is as debatable as any other. The idea of squeezing the band's first six albums into something resembling a definitive one-disc introduction seems almost as wise as presenting A Collection of Great Dance Songs (incidentally a Capitol release) as the one true and useful introduction to Pink Floyd, but to be more fair, the disc does cover just about all of the basics: all the singles and emphasis tracks, from Pablo Honey's "Creep" through Hail to the Thief's "2+2=5," along with a small assortment of the band's better-known album cuts. One track apiece comes from Pablo Honey (1993) and Amnesiac (2001); three are from Kid A (2000), four are from OK Computer (1997), and six are off The Bends (1995). The primary problem, of course, is that Radiohead are much more an albums band than a singles band, especially from OK Computer onward, so a natural reflex for someone who has valued the band since The Bends is to shriek in mild agony; in principle, a best-of Radiohead compilation is similar to a DVD containing somewhat thoughtfully picked scenes from films made by a specific director. For a very casual fan who has absolutely no interest in exploring beyond the songs he or she heard on the radio or through MTV and the like, this set will do (it has "Creep" and half of The Bends, after all, and then a bunch of "the weird stuff"), but otherwise it clearly serves a purpose more meaningful for the label than anyone else.
