"Bad Day" was started in 1986, when Bill Berry was still in the band, and was finally finished for this compilation. "Animal" was a recent song written for their upcoming studio album. Similarly, "All the Right Friends", originally written in the early 1980s, had been re-recorded by the band for use in Cameron Crowe's 2001 film Vanilla Sky. Finally, "The Great Beyond" was initially issued in 1999 as part of Milo? Forman's film on Andy Kaufman, Man on the Moon. It ended up becoming the band's biggest UK hit, with a #3 peak, in early 2000. This, the third inclusion of the song on an official release, is the only unedited version. On the Man on the Moon soundtrack, there is some dialogue from the movie at the end of the track; meanwhile, the single version is a radio edit, with the bridge omitted.

In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988?2003 was also issued in a limited two-disc edition that included a "Rarities and B-Sides" disc from the same era. The single-disc edition of the album reached #1 in the UK, while going gold in the U.S. and peaking at #8. The limited-edition two-disc release managed to reach #16 in the U.S. and #37 in the UK. There is also a vinyl edition which consists of two LPs inside a gatefold cover and a limited CD box-set edition featuring all eighteen tracks on their own individual 1-track CDs, with cover art from the original singles.

A notable omission from the album is the song "Shiny Happy People" which was deliberately left out by the band despite it being one of their biggest hits.[1]

A companion DVD, entitled In View: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003, was released at the same time. In 2005, Warner Bros. Records issued an expanded two-disc edition of the compilation which included a CD, a DVD-Audio disc containing a 5.1-channel surround sound mix of the album done by Elliot Scheiner, and the original CD booklet with expanded liner notes. The "Rarities and B-Sides" bonus disc from the limited edition is not included in this package. The CD (as with all in this series) was not remastered.

Although more varied in style and instruments than their previous efforts this album was really the start of Hawkwind's decline into mediocrity on record.

The band's best studio album, coming off of the success of Space Ritual. The group's rock roots are juxtaposed effectively with the swelling synthesizer flourishes and pretentious song ideas, creating the quintessential guitar-oriented space rock record. The highlight was the live recording of "You'd Better Believe It," with its crunchy guitars, but nobody minded keyboardman Simon House's languid synthesizer-laden "Hall of the Mountain Grill" (especially as it was followed by the Lemmy-sung "Lost Johnny," a great all-out rocker). The sound, especially the mix of ballsy high-volume guitar playing and soaring electronic keyboards ("The Psychedelic Warlords," "D-Rider"), would later get co-opted by outfits such as Blue �yster Cult ("(Don't Fear) The Reaper") and Kansas. Overall, this is the sound and imagery that the punkier kids and druggies who went to shows like Laserium were looking for, and if the producers of Laserium had devised something hooked around this record, it could have run 20 years or better.

Hard-rock juggernauts Guns 'N' Roses arrived as rock & roll saviors in a dark time of generic hair metal and bloated pop. With only five studio albums to draw from (one being the all-covers SPAGHETTI INCIDENT), nearly a third of the material on GREATEST HITS is unsurprisingly devoted to other people's songs. Inclusions range from a dramatic version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heavens Door" and an outsized take on Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" to punk classic "Ain't It Fun" and doo-wop nugget "Since I Don't Have You."

The band's original songs, however, are the heart of G'N'R's appeal. Start with the quintessential heavy-rock anthem "Welcome to the Jungle." Amid the thunderous time-keeping and tasty riffing are slinky grooves, sexy swagger, and quite an aura of danger. The acoustic "Patience" found these tattooed bad boys showing off a softer side, while archetypal power-ballad "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a perfect hybrid of sentiment and soaring guitar solos. Think of GREATEST HITS as a sampler for the sumptuous buffet that is G'N'R's recorded oeuvre.

John Clayton Mayer (born October 16, 1977) is an American singer-songwriter. Originally from Connecticut, he attended Berklee College of Music before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1998, where he refined his skills and gained a following. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award for "Your Body Is a Wonderland".

Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock and pop, but gradually began a transition towards the blues genre in 2005 by collaborating with renowned blues artists such as B. B. King and Eric Clapton, and by forming the John Mayer Trio. The blues influence can be heard on his album Continuum, released in September 2006. At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007 Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change". Mayer's career pursuits have extended to stand-up comedy, design, and writing; he has written pieces for magazines, most notably for Esquire. Hard-rock juggernauts Guns 'N' Roses arrived as rock & roll saviors in a dark time of generic hair metal and bloated pop. With only five studio albums to draw from (one being the all-covers SPAGHETTI INCIDENT), nearly a third of the material on GREATEST HITS is unsurprisingly devoted to other people's songs. Inclusions range from a dramatic version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heavens Door" and an outsized take on Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" to punk classic "Ain't It Fun" and doo-wop nugget "Since I Don't Have You."

The band's original songs, however, are the heart of G'N'R's appeal. Start with the quintessential heavy-rock anthem "Welcome to the Jungle." Amid the thunderous time-keeping and tasty riffing are slinky grooves, sexy swagger, and quite an aura of danger. The acoustic "Patience" found these tattooed bad boys showing off a softer side, while archetypal power-ballad "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a perfect hybrid of sentiment and soaring guitar solos. Think of GREATEST HITS as a sampler for the sumptuous buffet that is G'N'R's recorded oeuvre.

John Clayton Mayer (born October 16, 1977) is an American singer-songwriter. Originally from Connecticut, he attended Berklee College of Music before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1998, where he refined his skills and gained a following. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares and Heavier Things, did well commercially, achieving multi-platinum status. In 2003, he won a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy Award for "Your Body Is a Wonderland".

Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock and pop, but gradually began a transition towards the blues genre in 2005 by collaborating with renowned blues artists such as B. B. King and Eric Clapton, and by forming the John Mayer Trio. The blues influence can be heard on his album Continuum, released in September 2006. At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007 Mayer won Best Pop Vocal Album for Continuum and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change". Mayer's career pursuits have extended to stand-up comedy, design, and writing; he has written pieces for magazines, most notably for Esquire. He is also involved in philanthropic activities through his "Back to You" fund and his concern over global warming.

Produced by Daniel Lanois, critics hailed the record as a triumph for Dylan, after a string of poorly-reviewed albums. Oh Mercy gave Dylan his best chart showing in years: it reached #30 on the Billboard charts in the US and #6 in the UK.

While recovering from a hand injury in December of 1987, Dylan sat at his kitchen table late one evening and wrote "Political World", his first new song in a long time. It was a surprising development as he no longer felt motivated to write songs, but according to his autobiography, "Political World" came to him spontaneously and was easy to write; though no melody was composed, he came up with 20 verses.

Dylan's sudden rush of inspiration did not stop there. Days later (during the first week of 1988), he wrote verses for a second song, "What Good Am I?", over the course of one evening in a small art studio located on his property. The next day, he wrote another called "Dignity". Unlike his previous two songs, "Dignity" was written with the rhythm, tempo, and melody all in Dylan's head. Completed over the course of the entire afternoon and evening, Dylan composed the song after hearing of Pete Maravich's death on the morning news. Dylan had seen the basketball legend play in an NBA game years before and was saddened by his passing.

Over the next month or so, Dylan composed many more songs (20 by his estimate), including "Everything Is Broken", "Disease of Conceit", and "What Was It You Wanted?" Melodies were written for only a minority of them, and all of them were stored in a drawer in his home.

In the meantime, Dylan's injury was healing quite well, and he was encouraged by his doctor to play guitar again, as such activity was needed to stretch out his hand. Dylan began playing concerts again soon after his recovery, but for the most part, his songwriting ceased once his hand had healed.

Oh Mercy was hailed as a comeback, not just because it had songs noticeably more meaningful than anything Bob Dylan had recently released, but because Daniel Lanois' production gave it cohesion. There was cohesion on Empire Burlesque, of course, but that cohesion was a little too slick, a little too commercial, whereas this record was filled with atmospheric, hazy production -- a sound as arty as most assumed the songs to be. And Dylan followed suit, giving Lanois significant songs -- palpably social works, love songs, and poems -- that seemed to connect with his past. And, at the time, this production made it seem like the equivalent of his '60s records, meaning that its artiness was cutting edge, not portentous. Over the years, Oh Mercy hasn't aged particularly well, seeming as self-conscious as such other gauzy Lanois productions as So and The Joshua Tree, even though it makes more sense than the ersatz pizzazz of Burlesque. Still, the songs make Oh Mercy noteworthy; they find Dylan quietly raging against the materialism of President Reagan and accepting maturity, albeit with a slight reluctance. So, Oh Mercy is finally more interesting for what it tries to achieve than for what it actually does achieve. At its best, this is a collection of small, shining moments, with the best songs shining brighter than their production or the album's overall effect.

Radio Tarifa is one the outstanding world music groups of the turn of their time. Their name derives from the town of Tarifa, which is the part of Spain nearest to Morocco. The group's mixture of Spanish and Arabic music is not itself new (see Juan Pe�a Lebrijano. for example). What is new is that instead of simply fusing musical styles as they currently exist, Radio Tarifa goes back in time to the common past of those styles, back to before 1492 when the Moors and Jews were exiled from Spain, and imagines a shared style that might have evolved had history been different, including not just elements of Spanish and Arabic music but also other musics of the Mediterranean, of the Middle Ages, of the Caribbean. This invented style is not only fascinating in its own right, but sheds light upon the real styles of Spain, most notably flamenco.

The title of this 1998 CD reissue is a little inaccurate. This set does have a six-song session with the all-Philadelphia crew of tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Philly Joe Jones. But there are also four numbers from a month later in which Golson and pianist Bobby Timmons are joined by a trio of Frenchmen: trumpeter Roger Guerin (who was actually the date's leader), bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros. Ironically, the previous Swing LP had the equally inaccurate title of Benny Golson In Paris; the first date was actually cut in New York. In any case, the music is quite enjoyable, and the two dates match well together. Golson, Morgan and Bryant take excellent solos on three Golson tunes and one apiece by Bryant, John Lewis ("Afternoon In Paris") and Gigi Gryce. The French session finds the band performing four numbers from the Jazz Messengers songbook: "Stablemates" (which is on both dates), "Moanin'," "I Remember Clifford" and "Blues March." Guerin sounds fine filling in for Lee Morgan. Throughout, Golson is at the peak of his playing ability, and he often emerges as the solo star. Master reedman John Surman and organist Howard Moody in the rich acoustics of Ullern Church in Oslo with a repertoire that includes original compositions, improvisations, traditional folk songs and spirituals.
Howard Moody and Surman first collaborated on ?Proverbs and Songs? in 1996, where Moody was the conductor, subsequently also taking over the role of organist. John Surman: ?I really enjoyed Howard's approach to the improvised sections and we decided that we would try and do some more playing together in the future. I continued working with Howard when he invited me to compose some pieces for the Sarum Orchestra ? of which he is conductor and musical director. Eventually, after some exciting 'workshopping' sessions in Penshurst church in Kent, we were ready to record together.?

This is music of rare sensitivity. Fifteen tracks, each one a miniature fashioned with extraordinary care and joy, shared with organist Howard Moody. Far from being a junior partner here, Moody provides the deeper, darker hues that make these pictures so compelling. ? This is one of Surman?s most atmospheric albums, which given his output to date makes for the highest recommendation.

While not actually a ?new band,? Austin based Nelo (rhymes with jello) are releasing their debut CD on Houston?s Justice Records as well as Pedernales Records, owned by Willie Nelson and the discs producer (and Willie?s nephew) Freddy Fletcher.

The band built up a following with relentless touring. Their MySpace page has had over 200,000 song streams since starting two years ago! Amazing for a band without a CD! The genesis of the band was over 10 years ago with a number of the guys jamming together in high school in Dallas. Three of them, Goodson, Hill and Long took off to University of North Texas in Denton to study jazz while Ragland and Umstattd were playing together around Austin. In 2002 they all got back together adding another UNT alum St. Clair and Nelo was born. Obviously this was an already seasoned group of musicians. St. Clair has a masters in jazz studies and toured with the Glen Miller Orchestra before joining Nelo. Evidence of their extensive musical training are evident throughout the disc. The band uses the horns (saxophone, trumpet and trombone) very well, whether it be as a backing horn section as on ?You Don?t Know,? or as a feature instrument as is the slow mournful saxophone solo on ?Alright.?

The band had moved to Athens in 2005 and was doing well there when a homemade demo garnered a lot of attention back in Texas. Freddy Fletcher had people telling him he needed to check out the band and finally did at Momo?s in Austin last year. He quickly signed them and the band moved back to Austin to begin recording. Notable throughout the disc is the influence of Dave Matthews on the band. Besides the obvious jazz influences, the band lists Matthews, as well as Stevie Wonder and Duane Allman as influences. All of these influences, extensive training, and road experience combine to give a very enjoyable debut disc from an already seasoned group. ?Jumping Bean? is an infectiously upbeat tune that is the catchiest new tune I?ve heard so far this year. ?Footsteps? features seamless blending of acoustic guitar and saxophone. Previously mentioned tune ?You Don?t Know? is another standout with a bluesy feel and backing horn section, reminiscent of Roomful of Blues.

The band had moved to Athens in 2005 and was doing well there when a homemade demo garnered a lot of attention back in Texas. Freddy Fletcher had people telling him he needed to check out the band and finally did at Momo’s in Austin last year. He quickly signed them and the band moved back to Austin to begin recording. Notable throughout the disc is the influence of Dave Matthews on the band. Besides the obvious jazz influences, the band lists Matthews, as well as Stevie Wonder and Duane Allman as influences. All of these influences, extensive training, and road experience combine to give a very enjoyable debut disc from an already seasoned group. “Jumping Bean” is an infectiously upbeat tune that is the catchiest new tune I’ve heard so far this year. “Footsteps” features seamless blending of acoustic guitar and saxophone. Previously mentioned tune “You Don’t Know” is another standout with a bluesy feel and backing horn section, reminiscent of Roomful of Blues.

I bought this cd long years ago and it has ever been one of my favorites.

Still trying to stay in tune with the Seventies, Cal Tjader joins forces with another refugee from another time, guitarist Charlie Byrd, for an album of contemporary Brazilian-flavored jazz. The alliance is forged mostly on Byrd's terms, with bossa nova, samba and percussive displays from Brazil's interior dominating the grooves. This time, after proving very adaptable to previous experiments, Tjader seems to be out in the cold in these settings, and he lays out a lot more often than usual on this album. Byrd rides along in his gentle, prickly-toned manner on acoustic and electric guitars, and the rhythm section shifts personnel and instruments from track to track. Yet oddly enough, this is still a musically rich feast. Electric pianist Mike Wolff's "Samba de Oneida" is a marvelously propulsive samba, and "Tereza My Love," one of Antonio Carlos Jobim's most attractive sleepers, is given a lovely rendition. The title track, written by Airto Moreira, is given an authentic, rambunctious Airto-style treatment, very much up-to-date, but Cal doesn't sound totally comfortable with the rhythm on vibes, spending most of his time on timbales. Even though this isn't prime Tjader, the overall quality of the music makes it a winner. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide

?If one word could sum up this performance it would be "smooth." I have come late to the recordings of the Emerson String Quartet. This has to be among this very worthwhile group's best.

The Art of the Fugue is, if not my favorite piece by Bach, then certainly high on the short-list. This is music fully realized--with an almost mystic greatness. Les Violins du Roy and the Delme Quartet (in Robert Simpson's arrangement) have both done great chamber versions of the work.

This recording by the Emerson Quartet is well at ease in such lofty company.

This recording lets the music speak for itself. It does so brilliantly. The crystal clear sound quality works hand in hand with the performance.

Everything here is evenhanded and well judged. This is pulled off without any loss of the music's passion, fire, or insight. I cannot recommend this version of Bach's last great work highly enough.

If you are considering getting a copy, do not hesitate.		?

The Album Notes

?Led Zeppelin IV is the common, but unofficial name of the untitled fourth album of English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released on November 8, 1971. It has no official title printed anywhere on the album, but is called Led Zeppelin IV after the band's previous three albums. Atlantic Records catalogues have used the names Four Symbols and The Fourth Album. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page frequently refers to the album in interviews as Led Zeppelin IV, while singer Robert Plant thinks of it as "the fourth album, that's it". It is one of the best-selling albums in history, with over 23 million units sold in the United States, third most by any artist of all-time.
The album was initially recorded at Island Records's newly opened Basing Street Studios, London at the same time as Jethro Tull's Aqualung,before further recordings took place at Headley Grange, a remote Victorian house in East Hampshire, England, as well as Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, CA.
After the lukewarm, if not confused and sometimes dismissive, critical reaction Led Zeppelin III had received in the autumn of 1970, Jimmy Page decided that the next Led Zeppelin album would not have a title, but would instead feature four hand-drawn symbols on the inner sleeve and record label, each one chosen by the band member it represents. "We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket", Page explained. "Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing."
Owing to the lack of an official title, Atlantic Records initially distributed graphics of the symbols in many sizes to the press for inclusion in charts and articles.
The album was one of the first to be produced without conventional identification, and this communicated an anti-commercial stance that was controversial at the time (especially among certain executives at Atlantic Records).
Led Zeppelin IV remains a perennial favorite on classic rock radio and features "Stairway to Heaven", one of the most famous and popular rock songs ever recorded.
In 1998, Q magazine readers voted Led Zeppelin IV the 26th greatest album of all time; in 2000 "Q" placed it at #26 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2003, the album was ranked number 66 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It is #7 on Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Albums of the 1970s. A 2005 listener poll conducted by Toronto, Ontario classic rock station Q107 named Led Zeppelin IV the #2 best classic rock album of all time. In 2006, the album was rated #1 on Classic Rock magazine's 100 Greatest British Albums poll; that same year it was voted #1 in Guitar World 100 Greatest Albums readers' poll and was ranked #7 in ABC media's top ten albums.
The painting on the front of the album, showing an old man carrying a bundle of sticks, was allegedly purchased from a junk shop in Reading, Berkshire by a Led Zeppelin roadie (Jimmy Page has stated it was bought by Robert Plant) and affixed to the internal, papered wall of the partly demolished house for the photograph to be taken. 'The man with the sticks on his back' can also refer to the biblical Cain, who in legend was said to have ended his journeys on the moon, contributing to the image on the face of the moon. Film critic Robert Ring has also suggested that the picture might be a reference to the 1920s witchcraft documentary Haxan: Witchcraft through the Ages. In the film, there is a similar-looking witch, and inside the bundle of sticks are body parts from a thief hung on the gallows. This would be fitting, given Page's interest in hermetic studies. The house and surrounding area in the picture are by Butterfield Court in the Eve Hill area of Dudley.
The tower block on the back cover is of Butterfield Court in Dudley, England (not the now demolished Prince of Wales Court, as is sometimes incorrectly stated).
Butterfield Court can be seen, owing to it being 20-stories high and on top of a ridge, 25 miles away in rural Worcestershire and Shropshire and on a clear day, over 45 miles away in Wales. An image of the tower block can be seen here.
The inside of the album sleeve represents the tarot card of the Hermit it was painted by Barrington Coleby (the name is misspelled on the album sleeve), a friend of Jimmy Page's who lives in Switzerland.
The typeface for the lyrics to "Stairway to Heaven", printed on the inside sleeve of the album, was Page's contribution. He found it in an old arts and crafts magazine called "Studio Magazine" which started in the late 1800s. He thought the lettering interesting and arranged for someone to work up a whole alphabet. The Album Notes

“Led Zeppelin IV is the common, but unofficial name of the untitled fourth album of English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released on November 8, 1971. It has no official title printed anywhere on the album, but is called Led Zeppelin IV after the band's previous three albums. Atlantic Records catalogues have used the names Four Symbols and The Fourth Album. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page frequently refers to the album in interviews as Led Zeppelin IV, while singer Robert Plant thinks of it as "the fourth album, that's it". It is one of the best-selling albums in history, with over 23 million units sold in the United States, third most by any artist of all-time.
The album was initially recorded at Island Records's newly opened Basing Street Studios, London at the same time as Jethro Tull's Aqualung,before further recordings took place at Headley Grange, a remote Victorian house in East Hampshire, England, as well as Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, CA.
After the lukewarm, if not confused and sometimes dismissive, critical reaction Led Zeppelin III had received in the autumn of 1970, Jimmy Page decided that the next Led Zeppelin album would not have a title, but would instead feature four hand-drawn symbols on the inner sleeve and record label, each one chosen by the band member it represents. "We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket", Page explained. "Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing."
Owing to the lack of an official title, Atlantic Records initially distributed graphics of the symbols in many sizes to the press for inclusion in charts and articles.
The album was one of the first to be produced without conventional identification, and this communicated an anti-commercial stance that was controversial at the time (especially among certain executives at Atlantic Records).
Led Zeppelin IV remains a perennial favorite on classic rock radio and features "Stairway to Heaven", one of the most famous and popular rock songs ever recorded.
In 1998, Q magazine readers voted Led Zeppelin IV the 26th greatest album of all time; in 2000 "Q" placed it at #26 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2003, the album was ranked number 66 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It is #7 on Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Albums of the 1970s. A 2005 listener poll conducted by Toronto, Ontario classic rock station Q107 named Led Zeppelin IV the #2 best classic rock album of all time. In 2006, the album was rated #1 on Classic Rock magazine's 100 Greatest British Albums poll; that same year it was voted #1 in Guitar World 100 Greatest Albums readers' poll and was ranked #7 in ABC media's top ten albums.
The painting on the front of the album, showing an old man carrying a bundle of sticks, was allegedly purchased from a junk shop in Reading, Berkshire by a Led Zeppelin roadie (Jimmy Page has stated it was bought by Robert Plant) and affixed to the internal, papered wall of the partly demolished house for the photograph to be taken. 'The man with the sticks on his back' can also refer to the biblical Cain, who in legend was said to have ended his journeys on the moon, contributing to the image on the face of the moon. Film critic Robert Ring has also suggested that the picture might be a reference to the 1920s witchcraft documentary Haxan: Witchcraft through the Ages. In the film, there is a similar-looking witch, and inside the bundle of sticks are body parts from a thief hung on the gallows. This would be fitting, given Page's interest in hermetic studies. The house and surrounding area in the picture are by Butterfield Court in the Eve Hill area of Dudley.
The tower block on the back cover is of Butterfield Court in Dudley, England (not the now demolished Prince of Wales Court, as is sometimes incorrectly stated).
Butterfield Court can be seen, owing to it being 20-stories high and on top of a ridge, 25 miles away in rural Worcestershire and Shropshire and on a clear day, over 45 miles away in Wales. An image of the tower block can be seen here.
The inside of the album sleeve represents the tarot card of the Hermit it was painted by Barrington Coleby (the name is misspelled on the album sleeve), a friend of Jimmy Page's who lives in Switzerland.
The typeface for the lyrics to "Stairway to Heaven", printed on the inside sleeve of the album, was Page's contribution. He found it in an old arts and crafts magazine called "Studio Magazine" which started in the late 1800s. He thought the lettering interesting and arranged for someone to work up a whole alphabet. The complete show from this historic concert is now available a double CD on Purple Records. Deep Purple Mk 3's last performance, it was also Ritchie Blackmore's final concert.
Deep Purple - Live In Paris 75 is a fantastic album for a number of reasons. First of all, the history, you may or may not know, but this Paris gig is actually the very last Mk III concert (Blackmore, Coverdale, Hughes, Lord, Paice). After this show Ritchie Blackmore would leave the band to start his band Rainbow. Therefore, the show was always going to be special, full of emotion, and it did not disappoint. The music is as always top draw, but the thing that sets this show apart from other Mk III gigs is the volume of material. Included in this shows are of course the favourites from Mk II days (Smoke On The Water, Highway Star) and the favourites from Mk III's Burn album (Burn, Mistreated) but also performances of songs from Mk III's other album Stormbringer (Gypsy, Lady Double Dealer) not heard on classic gigs like Live In London and California Jamming.

As the name implies, this is an album of mostly Brazilian Samba, with Jazz and Pop tunes blended in as well. There is a splendid rendition of The Watermelon Man. Recorded in 1967, remastered and reissued by Koch Records in 2006.

Lovely Standards[/b] is Amel Larrieux's fourth solo release, following a trio of neo soul classics. As its name implies, the album comprises covers of standards by such illuminaries as Rodgers & Hammerstein and Duke Ellington. Stripped down to mainly piano, guitar, and some bass, the sound is slow and delicate, the perfect companion to a candle lit dinner. While her phrasing may not be like that of a Ella Fitzgerald or a Billie Holliday, she does bring her touch to the songs with her breathless, airy delivery and stripped sound. It is very far removed from her usual fuller, more experimental sound. But a good effort
