The complete show from this historic concert is now available a double CD on Purple Records. Deep Purple Mk 3's last performance, it was also Ritchie Blackmore's final concert.
Deep Purple - Live In Paris 75 is a fantastic album for a number of reasons. First of all, the history, you may or may not know, but this Paris gig is actually the very last Mk III concert (Blackmore, Coverdale, Hughes, Lord, Paice). After this show Ritchie Blackmore would leave the band to start his band Rainbow. Therefore, the show was always going to be special, full of emotion, and it did not disappoint. The music is as always top draw, but the thing that sets this show apart from other Mk III gigs is the volume of material. Included in this shows are of course the favourites from Mk II days (Smoke On The Water, Highway Star) and the favourites from Mk III's Burn album (Burn, Mistreated) but also performances of songs from Mk III's other album Stormbringer (Gypsy, Lady Double Dealer) not heard on classic gigs like Live In London and California Jamming.

Contrast is everything. Think of food for example: A big salty hunk of mature cheese is nicely offset by a couple of sweet grapes. Gastronomes would never dream of eating a rich foie-gras without the accompaniment of the honeyed sweetness of a glass of Sauternes.

The same is true with music; a whole album of fast-paced music quickly becomes draining. Likewise, an hour of chilled-out dub can send you to sleep. The saxophonist and composer Oliver Nelson was obviously acutely aware of this when choosing his musical sparring partners. Nelson's decision to share the frontline on three albums with the multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy is often described as brave. I believe that Nelson knew exactly what he was doing. Dolphy, a hero of the avant-garde, has a style so diametrically opposed to Oliver Nelson?s that the two just can?t help but complement each other.

This synergy is beautifully demonstrated on the 1961 recording Straight Ahead. Both soloists play a number of instruments, with Nelson on alto/tenor saxophone and clarinet and Dolphy on bass clarinet, alto saxophone and flute. Oliver Nelson was a jazz composer par excellence, and this album does not disappoint. It contains a number of memorable themes, such as ?Six and Four,? ?Mama Lou? and ?Straight Ahead.? Best of all: the soloing. The high-speed elasticity of Dolphy?s runs contrast perfectly with the pure, soaring tone of Nelson. The two horn players spark each other and generate music of genuine intensity.

It is worth noting that Oliver Nelson and Eric Dolphy played together on a number of other albums, the highlight of which must be the classic chamber-jazz of The Blues and the Abstract Truth. Pass the grapes?..

Oliver Nelson's fame as an arranger often overshadows his work as a leader, which is a shame considering the quality of his albums. A classic hard-bop date from 1961, STRAIGHT AHEAD displays the best of Nelson's skills--his writing (he composed five of the six numbers here), his fine command of the sax (his bright, open tone and clean, lyrical approach), and his excellent taste in personnel.

The latter is of particular note here. In addition to Roy Haynes (drums), George Duvivier (bass), and Richard Wyands (piano), the enormously talented Eric Dolphy is also on board, posing a triple threat on alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. Nelson bravely goes toe to toe with Dolphy, and while Nelson's playing is smart and accomplished, he is buried beneath the avalanche of Dolphy's invention (the multi-instrumentalist's knotty, springy lines, always full of surprise and humor, are nearly impossible to top). Everyone gets to stretch out on Milt Jackson's "Ralph's New Blues," Nelson's lilting "Images," and the frantic title cut, among others, making STRAIGHT AHEAD a magnificent showcase for all of these remarkably talented musicians.

Contrast is everything. Think of food for example: A big salty hunk of mature cheese is nicely offset by a couple of sweet grapes. Gastronomes would never dream of eating a rich foie-gras without the accompaniment of the honeyed sweetness of a glass of Sauternes.

The same is true with music; a whole album of fast-paced music quickly becomes draining. Likewise, an hour of chilled-out dub can send you to sleep. The saxophonist and composer Oliver Nelson was obviously acutely aware of this when choosing his musical sparring partners. Nelson's decision to share the frontline on three albums with the multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy is often described as brave. I believe that Nelson knew exactly what he was doing. Dolphy, a hero of the avant-garde, has a style so diametrically opposed to Oliver Nelson’s that the two just can’t help but complement each other.

This synergy is beautifully demonstrated on the 1961 recording Straight Ahead. Both soloists play a number of instruments, with Nelson on alto/tenor saxophone and clarinet and Dolphy on bass clarinet, alto saxophone and flute. Oliver Nelson was a jazz composer par excellence, and this album does not disappoint. It contains a number of memorable themes, such as “Six and Four,” “Mama Lou” and “Straight Ahead.” Best of all: the soloing. The high-speed elasticity of Dolphy’s runs contrast perfectly with the pure, soaring tone of Nelson. The two horn players spark each other and generate music of genuine intensity.

It is worth noting that Oliver Nelson and Eric Dolphy played together on a number of other albums, the highlight of which must be the classic chamber-jazz of The Blues and the Abstract Truth. Pass the grapes?..

Oliver Nelson's fame as an arranger often overshadows his work as a leader, which is a shame considering the quality of his albums. A classic hard-bop date from 1961, STRAIGHT AHEAD displays the best of Nelson's skills--his writing (he composed five of the six numbers here), his fine command of the sax (his bright, open tone and clean, lyrical approach), and his excellent taste in personnel.

The latter is of particular note here. In addition to Roy Haynes (drums), George Duvivier (bass), and Richard Wyands (piano), the enormously talented Eric Dolphy is also on board, posing a triple threat on alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. Nelson bravely goes toe to toe with Dolphy, and while Nelson's playing is smart and accomplished, he is buried beneath the avalanche of Dolphy's invention (the multi-instrumentalist's knotty, springy lines, always full of surprise and humor, are nearly impossible to top). Everyone gets to stretch out on Milt Jackson's "Ralph's New Blues," Nelson's lilting "Images," and the frantic title cut, among others, making STRAIGHT AHEAD a magnificent showcase for all of these remarkably talented musicians.

Richie Furay, a founding member of 60's icon bands Buffalo Springfield and Poco, and once part of David Geffen's answer to CSN in the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band.

When you think of bands like Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and Souther, Hillman and Furay, one name definitely links them all together: Richie Furay. Now, when you add the names Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Kenny Loggins, Timothy B. Schmidt, Rusty Young, etc. there is a stunning new album from Richie Furay that links these superstars all together called The Heartbeat Of Love.....12 great songs, a dozen rare performances from Furay and his friends bring that sound that we are all familiar with to this new cd.

"Heartbeat of Love" is a great CD, with tinges of country influence, superb harmonies, and themes that run from love to fun to friendship to the one woman in his heart (Furay does a beautiful updated version of "Kind Woman", a Springfield and Poco staple that was initially written for his wife, Nancy, nearly four decades ago). Furay gets help from his daughter Jessie and Sellen, who perform on just about every track, but also asked former bandmates Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Rusty Young to contribute. These artists, along with Kenny Loggins, Jeff Hanna (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and Mark Volman (Turtles) give the CD a well-rounded feel, but it is Furay's tenor voice, which is arguably one of the best ever in rock, that makes the album work. Richie sings like he was 25 years old, and it is easy to remember why he was the lead vocalist in both the Springfield and Poco...

The album opens with a fresh new track called Forever With You. Loaded with hooks and harmonic melodies, this tune gives the listener a welcome back feeling when they hear the wonderful voice of Richie Furay with a little help from his friends like Jeff Hanna from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Timothy B. Schmidt lends a hand on My Heart Is Cryin' Tonight. One of those rich ballads that Richie is famous for, with lyrics that match the emotion of the vocal artistry of both singers "I know a love that is strong, will somehow carry on, But My Heart Is Cryin' Tonight."

Neil Young and Kenny Loggins chime in on the Buffalo Springfield/ Poco revisit of Kind Woman. After a recent tour with Linda Rondstadt, this song was truly one of the biggest crowd pleasers. This 2007 treatment has all of the qualities you would expect from this classic and more.

Another strong track, Callin' Out Your Name features Stephen Stills and Richie's daughter Jesse Furay. This is classic Furay. No matter which way you look at it, a hook-laden song, masterful harmonies and number one musicianship. This will be one of your favorite go to songs once you add this album to your collection.

A previously unreleased SATYRICON song, "My Skin Is Cold", is included on the band's new EP of the same name, which was issued on June 2 in most of Europe. The track was omitted from the final running order of the
group's 2002 album "Volcano" and has remained unreleased up until this point. Joining those two tracks are live versions of "Repined Bastard Nation" and "Mother North" that were recorded in Gjallarhorn and include members of the Oslo Philarmonic Orchestra and the Norwegian Broadcast Orchestra as well as "Live Through Me" and "Existential Fear-Questions", two tracks that were only released as bonus songs on the LP edition of "Volcano".

"My Skin Is Cold" was released as a seven-inch gatefold vinyl single including a five-track CD. This is the only physical version of the EP and the packaging is said to be "truly one of a kind!"

Returning to the studio after a 14-year layoff, Emerson, Lake & Palmer stripped down their sound and amped up their attack for 1992's BLACK MOON. Its closest sonic cousin is the mid-'80s album Emerson and Lake recorded with drummer Cozy Powell. Sharp digital electronics replace Keith Emerson's classic analog synthesizer sounds, and the fanciful, classical-influenced prog-rock epics of yore are streamlined into a more accessible mainstream rock format, though some traces of the trio's vintage flash still pop up.

On first glance this record would not seem to have much promise from a jazz standpoint. Herbie Hancock performs a set of tunes which include numbers from the likes of Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, Sade, Paul Simon, Prince, the Beatles ("Norwegian Wood") and Kurt Cobain. However by adding vamps, reharmonizing the chord structures, sometimes quickly discarding the melodies and utilizing an all-star band, Hancock was able to transform the potentially unrewarding music into creative jazz. Hancock, who sticks to acoustic piano, shows that he is still in prime form, taking quite a few fiery solos. With Michael Brecker on tenor and surprisingly effective soprano, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Don Alias (along with an occasional horn or string section that was dubbed in later), the results are often quite hard-swinging and certainly never predictable. Although it is doubtful that any of these songs will ever become a jazz standard, Herbie Hancock has successfully created a memorable set of "new" music. Well worth investigating. -- Allmusic.com

'Odyssey' is a comprehensive collection of electronic musicpioneer Vangelis' work to date. The album features Vangelis' influential instrumental workouts including the main soundtrack themes to Bladerunner, Chariots Of Fire, and Missing as well as two collaborations with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson.
With such fabulous compositions as "Missing" and "L'enfant", thrown in with established classics such as "Conquest of Paradise" and "Chariots of Fire", the listener is ensured a pleasurable experience- especially as the play-time is almost 79 minutes.

Beautifully presented, the album is supplied with well written notes. Vangelis has remastered the disc himself, and even the established classics have been "tweaked" here and there to give a perhaps slightly softer, smoother sound.
