Johnny Griffin & Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis - Pisces (1962)

Johnny Griffin & Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis - Pisces (1962)
MP3 | 320kbps | Cover | RS.com | 125mb | 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Dustygroove.com:
A lost jazz treasure -- previously unissued material from the mighty 60s pairing of Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Johnny Griffin -- a twin-tenor team that was one of the strongest forces in jazz at the time! The set's a really unusual one in that it has the pair moving away from the hard-wailing "battle" styled sides of some of their live material -- and from the angular modernist Monkish tunes that also represented a side of their sound. Instead, the pair are playing mellow standards and ballads for the set -- kicking back in a warm cloud of soul and sax -- beautifully grooving at an easy pace without losing their sense of soul -- and in some way, really letting the best side of Davis' playing come to light, in a setting that recalls his excellent Love Calls album on RCA. The group's a quintet, with the further added attraction of Horace Parlan making a rare Riverside appearance -- and not just on piano, but also on celeste -- the strange bell-like keyboard that really brings a cool sound to the set! Titles include "Pisces", "What Is There To Say", "Yesterdays", "Willow Weep For Me", "Midnight Sun", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Bewitched Bothered & Bewildered". All tracks previously unissued -- and the CD also features 4 bonus alternate takes!

Allaboutjazz.com:

The title track of the Pisces disc is a pleasing Griffin waltz. The rest of the previously unreleased date features his fluid tenor on the ballads ?Willow Weep For Me?, ?She?s Funny That Way? and ?Sophisticated Lady?, each one presented with an equally flawless alternate take. The refined trio of pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Buddy Catlett and drummer Art Taylor is also heard on alternating selections accompanying Griffin?s partner Eddie ?Lockjaw? Davis on ?Midnight Sun?, ?Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered?, ?Yesterdays? and two takes of ?What Is There To Say?. Parlan performs the Davis selections on celeste, providing an additional interesting contrast between the tracks by these two master ballad interpreters.

Allmusic.com:
When Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis entered a New York studio with producer Orrin Keepnews on May 3, 1962, they did some things that were unusual for the two-tenor team. They played mostly ballads, they didn't engage in any tenor battles and ? most surprising of all ? they didn't perform together on any of the tunes. Griffin was featured on four songs, Davis on another four. The same rhythm section ? Horace Parlan, bassist Buddy Catlett and drummer Art Taylor ? was always present, but Parlan played piano on the songs featuring Griffin and celeste on the songs featuring Davis. For whatever reason, the performances remained in the can for 42 years; they weren't even mastered until 1966, and they finally saw the light of day when Fantasy released Pisces in 2004. Pisces begs the following question: why, in God's name, would two saxmen who had as strong a rapport as Griffin and Davis not perform together when they were in the studio at the same time? Emphasizing ballads was an excellent idea, but wouldn't it have made more sense for them to do it as co-leaders of a quintet? According to jazz critic Larry Hollis ? who wrote Pisces' informative liner notes ? Griffin and Davis' decision to play separately had to do with the fact that they "didn't want to be stereotyped as merely a two-tenor team." In any event, both saxmen are in good form on this CD, which is enjoyable whether the soloist is Griffin on "Willow Weep for Me" and Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" or Davis on "Midnight Sun" and "Yesterdays." For Griffin and Davis, deciding to play separately on May 3, 1962 was probably a mistake; even so, Pisces is a noteworthy (if less than essential) album that shouldn't have gone unreleased for so long.

Johnny Griffin - tenor sax;
Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis - tenor sax;
Horace Parlan - piano, celeste;
Buddy Catlett - bass;

Eliane Elias? return to the Blue Note label after a decade working elsewhere is a triumph. This salute to the late pianist Bill Evans, one of her favorite players, explores a number of songs he recorded, including both standards and originals. Evans? bassist from his final trio, Marc Johnson, is not only a long-time collaborator with Elias but also her husband; drummer Joey Baron rounds out the band. While Elias is influenced by Evans? playing style, his arrangements are only a launching pad for her approach to each tune; never does she sound like an obvious Evans clone. Her lush take of ?My Foolish Heart? features Johnson on the late Scott LaFaro?s bass (the talented Evans sideman who died in a 1961 car wreck just ten days after recording the landmark sets with the pianist at the Village Vanguard). ?Evanesque? is a newly discovered work that came from a cassette given to Johnson by Evans, so Elias adjusted the work by incorporating new material with his conception. The freewheeling take of ?Solar? is a masterful group improvisation upon the Miles Davis theme. Elias? moving ballad ?After All? is a sincere tribute to Evans. She has also built confidence in her singing over time; always gifted with a tender, sensuous voice, Elias glides gently over Johnson?s walking introduction to ?A Sleepin? Bee? and offers an equally delicate ?Walt for Debby.? She wrote words to Evans? previously unknown ?Here Is Something for You,? which was also discovered on the cassette given to Johnson. It is heard in two versions, a solo version with voice and piano where Elias mostly closely mirrors Evans? playing, then the original rehearsal by Evans, which segues into an excerpt of Elias? new version. The Japanese version of this delightful CD features an added track,

The Church - Starfish

The Church - Starfish

?Signing to Arista might have seemed an unusual move to start with, getting produced by L.A. studio types like Waddy Wachtel even more so. But for the Church the rewards were great ? if sometimes too clean around the corners in comparison to the song-for-song masterpiece Heyday, Starfish set up the band?s well-deserved breakthrough in the States. The reason was ?Under the Milky Way,? still one of the most haunting and elegant songs ever to make the Top 40. As Kilbey details a lyric of emotional distance and atmosphere, the band executes a quietly beautiful ? and as is so often the case with the Church, astonishingly well-arranged ? song, with mock bagpipes swirling through the mix for extra effect. That wasn?t the only strong point on an album with more than a few; the lead-off track ?Destination? was as strong an album opener as ?Myrrh,? if slower paced and much more mysterious, piano blending through the song?s steady pace. The rest of the first side has its share of highlights, such as the quietly threatening edge of ?Blood Money? and the confident, restrained charge of ?North, South, East and West.? Willson-Piper gets to lead off the second side with ?Spark,? a vicious, tight rocker that captures some of the best ?60s rock edge and gives it a smart update. Equally strong is Kilbey?s ?Reptile,? with an appropriately snaky guitar line and rhythm punch offset against weirdly soothing keyboards. Koppes has an okay vocal to his credit on ?A New Season,? but the stronger tracks are Kilbey?s other contributions, the strong guitar waltz of ?Antenna? (with great guest mandolin from David Lindley) and the closing charge (and very Church-like title) of ?Hotel Womb.? Performances throughout are at the least fine and at the most fantastic.? ? Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy (1968)

Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy (1968)

? Ranked #23 in Mojo?s ?The 50 Most Out There Albums Of All Time? - ?Apparently Frank?s favourite, LUMPY GRAVY is certainly a masterpiece. Of sorts.? ?
? Was it that Zappa?s music was so far ahead of its time, or was it just not what we thought a weirdo genius like him should be doing? Either way, since his death, his stature as a serious composer has grown. Lumpy Gravy missed most by a mile because it was the first of Zappa?s ?challenging? orchestral pieces, and not what his audience had come to expect. Performed by the Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, it was a lengthy instrumental suite broken up by equally ?challenging? dialogue. On the back cover, Frank looks out and asks, ?is this phase 2 of We?re Only In It For The Money??. No, we don?t think so. ?

Nick Drake - Pink Moon (1972)

Nick Drake - Pink Moon (1972)

Amazon.com
Pink Moon is the sound of Nick Drake cracking up. That's not exactly true--some have long thought that his death by an overdose of an anti-depressant was an accident, and not suicide--but this album, recorded over two late nights, certainly sounds like a fever dream. Peter Buck of R.E.M. has called the album "Like an English version of (Robert Johnson's great blues) `Hellhound on My Trail.'" The lyrics to the title song read in their entirety: "Saw it written and I saw it say, pink moon is on its way. None of you will stand so tall, pink moon is gonna get ye all. And it's a pink moon." Aside from a splash of piano, the only instrumentation on this stark and spooky collection is Drake's eloquent acoustic guitar. --John Milward

CARLOS SANTANA - 1970 - Abraxas

CARLOS SANTANA - 1970 - Abraxas

Wikipedia:

Abraxas is the second album by Santana, the popular latin rock n' roll group named after lead guitarist Carlos Santana. Consolidating their live success at the Woodstock Festival 1969, and the interest generated by their first album, Santana, the band took some time to issue this follow-up. Released in September 1970, the album's mix of salsa, blues, rock and roll, jazz and other influences made it a classic that defined Santana's early sound, and showed a musical maturation from their first album. Often considered Santana's greatest album[citation needed], it drew widespread appeal for its mixture of latin influences with familiar rock and roll themes such as overdriven electric guitar, organ and heavy drums. The album also demonstrates Santana's stylistic versatility, including tracks such as "Samba pa Ti" (a classic slow-burning, seductive piece)[1] and "Incident at Neshabur", both being instrumentals. The latter has several rhythm and time signature changes consistent with its jazz feel. Latin percussion ? congas, bongos and timbales, as well as a conventional rock drum setup, make this Santana's first foray into true Latin rhythm. In 2003, the album was ranked number 205 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

CARLOS SANTANA - 1972 Caravanserai

CARLOS SANTANA - 1972 Caravanserai

Wikipedia:

Caravanserai, released in October 1972, marked a major turning point in Carlos Santana's career as it was a sharp departure from his critically acclaimed first three albums. 1971 marked the departure of original bassist David Brown who was replaced by Doug Rauch and Tom Rutley. Keyboardist Gregg Rolie, who was having a falling-out with Santana, was replaced by Tom Coster on a few songs.

The sound contrasted greatly with Santana's trademark fusion of salsa, rock, and jazz, and concentrated mostly on jazz-like instrumental passages. All but three songs were instrumentals, and consequently the album yielded no hit singles. The album is the first among a series of Santana albums that were known for their increasing musical complexity, marking a move away from the popular rock format of the early Santana albums towards a more contemplative and experimental jazz sound. While Caravanserai is regarded as an artistic success, the musical changes that began on its release in 1972 marked the start of a slide in Santana's commercial popularity.

Sonny Clark Trio - Sonny Clark Trio (1957)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers + Scans ~ RS.com ~ 120mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Amazon.com reviewer:
This album from 1957 excellently captures what was definitive of jazz at that time, and in so doing became one of the best jazz albums of all time. Sonny Clark never had as big a name as other prominent pianists of the day, but he deserves to be prominently remembered. His style on this album obviously echoes with the style of Bud Powell but (like the great Dave McKenna on his trio recordings from this same time period) his playing also brings with it a smooth lyricism that is new. Sonny Clark's playing on this album has the sound of beautiful perfection, and (along with the great work of Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums) the playing really swings. The tunes are all ones recorded many times by many others, but these renditions really set the standard for how these "standards" sound. "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" is particularly strong. This is a great album to introduce jazz to someone, and also is an essential study album for anyone seriously interested in the art form.

Allmusic.com:
Pianist Sonny Clark sounds very much at home on this trio set with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Sticking to bop standards, Sonny Clark essentially plays his version of Bud Powell, carving out his own approach to the influential style. The CD reissue adds three alternates to the six selections and includes such gems as "Two Bass Hit," "Be-Bop" and "Tadd's Delight."

Personnel:
Sonny Clark (piano);
Paul Chambers (bass);
Philly Joe Jones (drums)

Barry Harris Quintet - Newer Than New (1961)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 84mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Amazon.com reviewer:
Barry Harris is probably most widely recognized in jazz circles as the pianist from Lee Morgan's famous Blue Note album The Sidewinder, but he also made dozens of albums as a leader, most often in a trio setting. One of the rare occasions when he expanded his lineup was on "Newer Than New," recorded on September 28, 1961. This album marked the debut of both frontline players -- trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer and alto saxophonist Charles McPherson, the latter of whom carved out a nice little jazz career for himself in the coming years. Completing the quintet is Ernie Farrow on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums, and together they perform four Harris originals and four standards. The tunes range from hard bop and a couple of latin-tinged numbers to classic bebop, and while they are performed well, they are certainly not "Newer Than New," or any manner of cutting edge for that matter, as the cover art attempts to convey. Despite this, it is a solid session from an all too often overlooked player.

Allmusic.com:

A quick listen to the lively bop on Newer Than New may enlist a perplexing question: Was this music really recorded 40 years ago? Apparently so, but the music still sounds fresh and exciting. If pianist Harris set out to show bop was still a vital force in 1961, he accomplished his task. Of course he didn't do this alone. Trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer, alto Charles McPherson, bassist Ernie Farrow, and drummer Clifford Jarvis join him on eight tunes that would've made Parker and Gillespie proud. The influence of bop pioneers is evident on tunes like "The Last One" and "Anthropology," both giving the horns lots of room to soar against the backdrop of dynamic rhythm. "Mucho Dinero," one of several Harris originals, has an exuberant Latin feel. After the horns set the piece in motion, Harris takes the first solo, creating colorful textures with his keen sense of harmony. Newer Than New also places special emphasis on the young horn players, providing McPherson and Hillyer lots of room to show what they've got. Both echo Parker and Gillespie without copying them. Hillyer displays a fat rich tone on numbers like "Easy to Love," while McPherson's resonant pitch, no matter how quickly he's playing, always comes across. Farrow and Jarvis keep the shifting rhythms heavy in the mix, pushing each soloist to create something vital. The title Newer Than New perhaps mocks the obsession with the latest thing, as opposed to opting for the timelessness of high-octane improvising. Jazz styles, like all styles, come and go, but great music like Newer than New transcends styles. It's also fun (and illustrative) to listen to an album like this back to back with the latest retro jazz. Barry Harris and his colleagues make great jazz without the least bit of self-consciousness. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Sonny Clark - My Conception (1959)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers + Booklet ~ RS.com ~ 140mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Amazon.com:
This welcome collection pairs two late-1950s sessions that sat in the Blue Note vaults for decades after they were recorded. It offers a variety of gifts for the Sonny Clark fan. First, there is the matter of sidemen. The March 1959 session that spawned the first six tunes boasts the presence of tenor Hank Mobley and drummer Art Blakey, both found in inspired form here. Mobley is bright throughout, playing with a bit more fire than usual while producing tender and moving work on the ballad title track. Blakey, meanwhile, is an animal (listen to his fury on "Minor Meeting"), goading and prodding and steering from the background. The final three songs, from December of 1957, include guitarist Kenny Burrell, tenor Clifford Jordan and drummer Pete LaRoca. Of course, Clark is the unifying theme. His compositions are crafty enough to keep things interesting but simple enough to allow assured, fluid improvisation. His piano work shows equal parts grace and grit, delicacy and drive, and his support of the other soloists is consistently interesting and lively. --Marc Greilsamer

Cduniverse.com:
Pianist Sonny Clark enjoyed a rich recording career in the golden age of Blue Note. MY CONCEPTION is a combination of a 1959 session that included regulars Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey with a bonus session recorded two years earlier that featured guitarist Kenny Burrell. Clark's amazing dexterity is featured throughout as he trades hot licks with Mobley, Byrd, and Blakey in the first half and blues runs with Burrell and saxophonist Clifford Jordan in the second. As to be expected with this cast of legends, the performances from either session are pristine and swinging.

The obvious contrasts between the two different ensembles allow for a comparison of Clark's subtle adaptations to his environs while maintaining his signature nimble style. This is especially evident on the tune shared by both sessions, "Minor Meeting." In the 1957 recording with Burrell and Jordan it is a relaxed swinger. In 1959, under the powerful hands of Blakey, et al, it became a fiery bopper. Taken as a whole, this is a valuable double-shot that offers more rewards than most.

Personnel:

Sonny Clark (piano);
Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone);
Donald Byrd (trumpet);
Kenny Burrell (guitar);
Paul Chambers (bass);

Maxwell Chandler on winamop.com:
...I would recommend as a first foray into the works of Mal Waldron his album ?Impressions? (1958 Prestige). This was an album Mal did upon returning from a European tour with Billy Holiday and right before emigrating to Europe.

The album is a trio date and while in no way watered down, is more accessible than some of his later works. The fidelity of the album is very good with no remastering and only the original liner notes reproduced. Throughout the album the trio plays with great sympathy. On hearing this, one does not play the game of wishing ?so and so? was behind the drums instead.

The album is made up of originals and some standards made their own by the trio. Center to the album is what Mal called his ?Overseas Suite?(?Champs Elysees?/?Ciao?/?C?est Formidable?) which is a three sectioned suite for the trio built upon his impressions of Paris. My one bone of contention on this album is the suite is broken up by other non-suite tracks.

However, the non suite tracks are just as good. One of my favorite moments on the album is actually one of the non-suite tracks ?All About Us?. The song was actually written by Mal?s wife Elaine. It is very reminiscent of the music written by Italian film director Federico Fellini?s scorer of choice Nino Rota, minus some of the saccharine touches he sometimes injects. The brushed drums and bass dance a happy waltz to the melody presented by a piano.

From the start of his solo career, Mal never settled for constructing songs as a vehicle for his solos. A song routed in the hard-bop style does not often stay there. The last part of the Overseas suite ?C?est Formidable? best illustrates this. The song starts off with slow dark chords which float alone until gaining speed with percussive kisses which signal the rest of the trios entrance into the piece. Also witness in this piece how, like few other pianist at this time, Mal was able to effortlessly change the cadence of his piano with in one piece.

Initially conceived during a rehearsal for a UK television special with Billy, ?All the Way? starts with a slinking piano figure, which as the piece progresses is replaced by a more vocal voicing. It is one of the few songs from the great American song book in which the absence of one of the many vocalists who have covered it is not noticeable. The same piano figure which had started the song re -enters to end it, reminding us that all we need is indeed, already right here.

Allmusic.com:
This CD reissue brings back one of pianist Mal Waldron's lesser-known sessions from the 1950's. Teamed up in a trio with bassist Addison Farmer and drummer Al "Tootie" Heath, Waldron performs three originals from what he called his "Overseas Suite" along with a fine song by his wife ("All About Us") and three standards. Waldron's brooding Monk-influenced style is heard in its early prime on this excellent release.

Personnel:
Mal Waldron, piano;
Addison Farmer, bass;
Albert "Tootie" Heath, drums

Recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey, March 20, 1959.

Tracks:

This CD from Fantasy's Original Jazz Classics series is essentially a bebop jam session. The quintet (altoist Phil Woods, trumpeter Ray Copeland, pianist Red Garland, bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Nick Stabulas) performs three Charlie Parker compositions and three originals by Woods, but the melodies are quickly discarded in favor of heated solos. Woods and the greatly underrated Copeland work together very well, and Garland is a major asset both as a soloist and as an accompanist to the horns. This little-known date is quite enjoyable.

Allmusic.com:
Johnny Griffin, known as the world's fastest tenor-saxophonist in the late 1950's, purposely slowed down a bit on some of his later Riverside albums including this set which was reissued on a 1998 CD. Griffin is joined by pianist Buddy Montgomery (who switches to vibes on two of the six numbers), bassist Monk Montgomery (heard in a rare outing on acoustic bass) and drummer Art Taylor. They perform four standards (including "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set" and "That's All") and a couple of Griffin's basic originals. The music swings and the classic tenorman cuts loose a few times, making for enjoyable if not quite essential music.

Paul Chambers - Bass On Top (1957)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 98mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Cduniverse.com:
Paul Chambers cut this little known album for Blue Note in 1957. Those familiar with Chambers's bass work on straight bop recordings, especially those done with Miles Davis in the 1950s, might be surprised at the range and variety here. Chambers plays the bass as a lead instrument (as the album's title indicates), and leads a crack ensemble--which includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, Hank Jones on piano, and Art Taylor on drums--through a rousing session of exploratory post-bop. This one comes recommended to collectors, not least for the Rudy Van Gelder remastering.
Allmusic.com:
One of the top bassists of 1955-1965, Paul Chambers was among the first in jazz to take creative bowed solos (other than Slam Stewart, who hummed along with his bowing). He grew up in Detroit, where he was part of the fertile local jazz scene. After touring with Paul Quinichette, Chambers went to New York, where he played with the J.J. Johnson-Kai Winding quintet and George Wallington. He spent the bulk of his prime years (1955-1963) as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, participating in virtually all of Davis' classic recordings of the era. When he left, "Mr. P.C." (as John Coltrane called him in one of his originals) worked with the Wynton Kelly Trio (1963-1966) and freelanced until his death. Chambers, a consistently inspired accompanist who was an excellent soloist, made many recordings during his brief period, including some with Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Donald Byrd, Bud Powell, and Freddie Hubbard, in addition to a few as a leader.

Paul Chambers (bass);

obby Timmons - This Here is Bobby Timmons (1960)

Bobby Timmons - This Here is Bobby Timmons (1960)

Bobby Timmons - This Here is Bobby Timmons (1960)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 94mb
Genre: Jazz

Jazzwax.com:
Between mid-1956 and the end of 1959, pianist Bobby Timmons recorded as a sideman on some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the period. Three songs he composed during this 43-month span became instant jazz hits and standards. In January 1960, he recorded his first album as a leader?This Here Is Bobby Timmons?and its soulful impact is still being felt. Yet today, Timmons' contribution to jazz?as an accompanist, writer, leader and innovator of a new sound?is vastly overlooked and undervalued.

Where pianist Horace Silver's funk style developed largely from bop, Timmons' funk approach had gospel roots and was heavily church-influenced. There was a rhythmic lyricism to Timmons' powerful playing that was both bluesy and percussive. The strength and pungency of his sound also was distinct and impossible to mimic. Sadly, Timmons' recordings as a trio leader declined as the 1960s wore on?a victim of the economic times and his own bad habits. Trio recordings that do exist are exceptional, especially Timmons' first leadership date?This Here is Bobby Timmons (Riverside). The album was and remains a stunner.

This Here Is Bobby Timmons features nine tracks, four of which he wrote?This Here, Moanin', Dat Dere and Joy Ride. Timmons had first recorded Moanin' with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers two years earlier for the album of the same name. This Here was introduced in 1959 on The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco.

After recording This Here Is Bobby Timmons, the pianist recorded six more leadership albums for Riverside and six for Prestige after Riverside went under. He also continued to record as a sideman. But after 1964, Timmons recorded less and less?a victim of declining popular demand for earthy jazz trios, increased pressure to produce This Here-like standards, and battles with a terribly destructive drug habit.

Timmons' sessions continued to dwindle in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His last known date was a live recording of Bag's Groove in 1971. In 1974, after failing health, Timmons died of cirrhosis of the liver. He was only 38.

ORRIN KEEPNEWS, from the liner notes:
In separating the wheat from the chaff in the area of soul, there seems no room for doubt as to which side of the ledger Bobby Timmons belongs on. The young pianist, who is making his debut as a leader on this album, is already recognized by a great many listeners as being among the most soulful of all. This is true even though quite possibly many of them have not been aware that it was Timmons they were digging. For Bobby's first real tastes of jazz success have represented rather a reversal of the usual order of things: at a time when not too many have been aware of him as a player, his tunes--specifically Moanin' and This Here--have already become household words to the jazz public.

Appropriately enough, this trio LP gets underway with Bobby's own version of This Here. Cannonball [Adderley]'s frequent description of this number as being "simultaneously a shout and a chant" and being related to "the roots of soul church music" is a good word-picture of its nature. It is very definitely a hand-clapping number: when it is played on the job, it is endlessly fascinating to watch and hear the crowd join in that way (even though the fact that it is also a waltz seems to escape a good many people and causes them to get fearfully tangled up in their clapping!).

Moanin' is an equally rhythmically compulsive effort that first drew attention when recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. There are two other newer Timmons tunes here as well: Dat Dere, another shouter with just a suggestion of a Latin strain to it; and the driving Joy Ride. The former leaves room for solo work by Sam Jones, currently a team-mate of Timmons' in the Adderley group (he has also worked with Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk) and unquestionably among the finest and firmest of today's bassists. Joy Ride, in turn, spotlights the other member of this trio, drummer Jimmy Cobb, who was in an earlier Cannonball group a couple of years back. He has also worked with Dizzy, and has more recently been a Miles Davis mainstay.

The other selections are all standards, and they serve to demonstrate both that Bobby's soulful touch can embrace a wide variety of material and that he is capable of a good deal of lyrical tenderness-- as in the relaxed ballad treatment of Funny Valentine (this version, incidentally, is know to Bobby's friends as "Funky Valentine") and in his unacompanied performance of Billy Strayhorn's aching Lush Life.

Even more directly relevant is the fact that this young pianist has been developing and maturing at a rather astounding rate, and has found for himself a distinctive and validly soulful groove that marks him not only as one of the real coming stars but also as someone very much worth listening to right now.

1 Spanish Castle Magic
2 There Is Love
3 Killing Floor
4 Mr. Rattlesnake
5 The Brick
6 I'm Doin' Fine
7 Walk It
8 Everytime I Turn Around

Killer ?Live? disc from bad-ass Dallas blues/rock stratmaster Lance Lopez featuring 8 tracks (65 minutes) of brain-damaging, over-the-top, raw, gut-wrenching, Hendrix- inspired, blues/rock heavy guitar power trio fury captured ?live without a net?. Recorded ?Live in Holland? on his Euro-2000 tour, L.L. goes straight for the jugular and takes no prisoners as he unleashes a torrential downpour of killer riffage and mind-blowing licks from his beat-up Strat. The ?LIVE? disc is further proof and a testament to the fact that Lance Lopez reigns supreme in the world of serious bluesy heavy guitar rock.

Coming straight out of the gate with a killer, heavy version of "Spanish Castle Magic" by James Marshall Hendrix, Brother Lance Lopez makes his presence known and pays ?homage? to our ?Main Man? and does the ?Father of Heavy Guitar? proud with his raw, hard-assed, unabashed version. LL is ?on fire? as he rips his poor axe apart like a ?pitbull on steroids? on this track & thru-out the killer ?Live? disc, ending the disc on a good bluesy note with a phenomenal 12 minute ?slow blues burner? in the form of the classic, self-penned ?Everytime I Turn Around?. Complete with an outstanding 5 minute instrumental slow blues guitar intro jam featuring the Dallas stratmaster diggin? deep in his back pocket for dynamic, fluid blues licks on par with the late, great SRV, ?Everytime I Turn Around? is what the REAL blues are all about and this stellar track is L.L.?s ultimate ?musical tribute? to the blues. As an added bonus and as our way of saying thanks, we have included a mind-bending, awesome, over-the-top, extended Live version of ?Hear My Train A Comin?? as a ?HIDDEN BONUS TRACK? on the ?Live? disc where Lance Lopez takes his guitar rite over the edge and into a new heavy guitar dimension. L.L. plays his guitar on this killer Hendrix jam like a man possessed and as if his damn life depended on it. As if the ?Live? disc wasn't kool enough, this killer heavy guitar ?bonus? jam alone is worth the price of admission. Somewhere in Heavy Guitar Heaven Brother Jimi is smiling down upon us.

The Lance Lopez: "Live" disc is a killer slab of brain-damaging, blues/rock heavy guitar madness that is HIGHLY recommended to fans of HENDRIX (long live the musical spirit of JIMI), FRANK MARINO, ROBIN TROWER, ERIC GALES, KING'S X, S.R.V., DOYLE BRAMHALL, EDDIE HAZEL, LENNY KRAVITZ (imagine Lenny Kravitz meets Hendrix!!!), STEVIE SALAS, RICHIE KOTZEN, JOE BONAMASSA, (early vintage) ZZ TOP, INDIGENOUS, CRAIG ERICKSON, BUDDAHEADS, SKY HIGH & CLAS YNGSTROM, WES JEANS, KAMCHATKA and just about any other killer get-down rippin' blues/rock axeslingers you have ever heard. Fans of his four previous killer Grooveyard discs: ?Wall of Soul?, ?Simplify Your Vision?, ?Higher Ground? & ?First Things First? will heavily dig the awesome ?Live? disc. You can run but you can?t hide from the blues/rock heavy guitar fury of the bad-ass Dallas axeripper. L.L. is gonna getcha on the ?Live? disc.

Eliane Elias - Something For You (Eliane Elias Sings and Plays Bill Evans) (2008)

Eliane Elias - Something For You (Eliane Elias Sings and Plays Bill Evans) (2008)
Genre: Jazz, Piano and Vocal | 160 kbps mp3 | 21 Jan 2008 | 73.4 Mb

Review:
Eliane Elias' return to the Blue Note label after a decade working elsewhere is a triumph. This salute to the late pianist Bill Evans, one of her favorite players, explores a number of songs he recorded, including both standards and originals. Evans' bassist from his final trio, Marc Johnson, is not only a long-time collaborator with Elias but also her husband; drummer Joey Baron rounds out the band. While Elias is influenced by Evans' playing style, his arrangements are only a launching pad for her approach to each tune; never does she sound like an obvious Evans clone. Her lush take of "My Foolish Heart" features Johnson on the late Scott LaFaro's bass (the talented Evans sideman who died in a 1961 car wreck just ten days after recording the landmark sets with the pianist at the Village Vanguard). "Evanesque" is a newly discovered work that came from a cassette given to Johnson by Evans, so Elias adjusted the work by incorporating new material with his conception. The freewheeling take of "Solar" is a masterful group improvisation upon the Miles Davis theme. Elias' moving ballad "After All" is a sincere tribute to Evans. She has also built confidence in her singing over time; always gifted with a tender, sensuous voice, Elias glides gently over Johnson's walking introduction to "A Sleepin' Bee" and offers an equally delicate "Walt for Debby." She wrote words to Evans' previously unknown "Here Is Something for You," which was also discovered on the cassette given to Johnson. It is heard in two versions, a solo version with voice and piano where Elias mostly closely mirrors Evans' playing, then the original rehearsal by Evans, which segues into an excerpt of Elias' new version. The Japanese version of this delightful CD features an added track, "Re: Person I Knew."(Ken Dryden-allmusic)

Dexter Gordon (with Bud Powell) - Our Man In Paris (1963)

Dexter Gordon (with Bud Powell) - Our Man In Paris (1963)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers + Scans ~ RS.com ~ 125mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Ron Saranich, Cosmik.com:
Our Man In Paris, a recently remastered 1963 release, finds the great tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon offering up an entire album of classic standards. Gordon was living in Paris at the time and recorded this great music with two fellow expatriates - Bud Powell on piano and Kenny Clarke on drums, plus the French bass player Pierre Michelot, so the title could well have been Our Men In Paris. However, make no mistake; this was Gordon's album. He played with passion and eloquence, always full of thoughtful ideas and remarkable inventiveness. Obviously inspired by a couple of old friends and the less prejudicial atmosphere of Paris, Gordon produced another musical work comparable to his earlier Blue Note masterpieces GO! and A Swingin' Affair.

Why all standards? As the Producer Francis Wolff explained, "Dexter's originals were not so good; besides, Bud has great trouble learning new tunes." Bud Powell was in the midst of severe personal problems at the time, but the familiar material was just the tonic Powell needed. He played like the genius he was, whether perfectly backing Gordon as a member of the rhythm section or contributing a plethora of superbly crafted solos. Kenny Clarke, considered the father of bebop drumming, generated considerable excitement as well.

"Our Man In Paris" is like a pair of well worn jeans. Classic style along with familiar comfort. Great for any occasion. Dexter Gordon was one of the finest tenor saxophonists of the twentieth century and his Blue Note records are outstanding examples of his prime. So slip on your favorite jeans, slide into your favorite chair, and reward yourself for a productive week with a listen to Our Man In Paris.

Cduniverse.com:
One of the most successful of Blue Note's 'blue' period and an album that remains his finest work. Although his tenor sax occasionally grates, this is a brilliant example of late bebop. Supported by Bud Powell (piano), Kenny Clarke (drums) and Pierre Michelot (bass), the simple quartet sound coolly in control. 'Willow Weep For Me' is played with great beauty and 'A Night in Tunisia' is yet another well-crafted version. The wonderful bonus of 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' and 'Like Someone In Love' (from Powell's Alternate Takes) on the CD reissue puts this album in the first division.

Allmusic.com:
This 1963 date is titled for Dexter Gordon's living in self-imposed Parisian exile and recording there with two other expatriates and a French native. Along with Gordon, pianist Bud Powell and Kenny "Klook" Clarke were living in the City of Lights and were joined by the brilliant French bassman Pierre Michelot. This is a freewheeling bop date with the band working out on such categoric standards as "Scrapple from the Apple," and "A Night in Tunisia." In addition, American vernacular tunes such as "Willow Weep for Me" and "Stairway to the Stars" are included. Gordon is at the very top of his game here. His playing is crisp, tight, and full of playful fury. Powell, who at this stage of his life was almost continually plagued by personal problems, never sounded better than he does in this session. His playing is a tad more laid-back here, but is nonetheless full of the brilliant harmonic asides and incendiary single-note runs he is legendary for. The rhythm section is close-knit and stop-on-a-dime accurate.

Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone);
Bud Powell (piano);
Pierre Michelot (bass);

Kenny Dorham - Una Mas (1963)
Mp3 @320kbps - 83mb, Rapidshare - Genre: Jazz

Amazon.com:
Trumpeter Kenny Dorham was a significant presence in the bop and hard bop scenes, a musician whose distinctive, lyrical style had been apparent from his work in the late '40s with Charlie Parker's quintet. The year 1963 was especially good for him. He had just returned from a trip to Brazil where he had been absorbing the bossa nova, and he had formed a musical partnership with Joe Henderson, a powerful young tenor saxophonist whose rugged sound and coiling lines were an ideal complement to Dorham's often subtler approach. This session is the first in a series of dates that would pair the two, and the fifteen minute "Una Mas," a percolating mix of hard bop sonorities and a samba beat, was the first recorded example of Dorham's distinctive exploration of bossa nova (his "Blue Bossa" would become a jazz standard). Pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Tony Williams all take naturally to the new beat, handling it as effectively as they do "Straight Ahead."

Joe Henderson, tenor saxophone
Herbie Hancock, piano
Butch Warren, bass
Tony Williams, drums

Booker Ervin - Exultation! (1963)

Booker Ervin - Exultation! (1963)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers + Scans ~ RS.com ~ 103mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Allmusic.com:
Booker Ervin's debut for Prestige (which has been reissued on CD with two shorter alternate takes added) matches the intense tenor with altoist Frank Strozier, pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Walter Perkins for some bop-based music that is actually quite adventurous. Highlights include "Mour" (based on "Four"), "Black and Blue" and Ervin's "Mooche Mooche." Ervin and Strozier made a mutually inspiring team; pity that this was their only recording together.

Amazon.com reviewer:
Booker Ervin made an amazing string of albums for Prestige from 1963-65, equal to anything in the Blue Note catalog from that golden period, and "Exultation" is no exception. On this album Booker is joined by Frank Strozier on alto sax, Walter Perkins on drums, and two Blue Note regulars, Butch Warren on bass and Horace Parlan on piano. (Ervin joined the latter two on Parlan's "Happy Frame of Mind, which is out of print domestically but still available as an import -- see my review.) The album's standout tunes in my opinion are "Mooche Mooche," and the soulful, groovin' "No Land's Man." The CD also features the "short take" single versions of "Just In Time" and "No Land's Man" as bonus tracks. While this is a terrific outing, I am only giving it four stars because "Exultation" falls short compared to his five-star efforts -- "The Blues Book," "The Song Book," and "The Space Book". However, fans of the aforementioned five-star discs will thoroughly enjoy "Exultation."

Personnel:
Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone);
Frank Strozier (alto saxophone);
Horace Parlan (piano);
Butch Warren (bass);
Walter Perkins (drums)

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 19, 1963

Booker Ervin - Groovin' High (1964)

Booker Ervin - Groovin' High (1964)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Cover Scans ~ RS.com ~ 77mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Allmusic.com:
This CD reissue has four selections from the same sessions (but not released on the original sets) that resulted in The Freedom Book, The Blues Book and The Space Book. "Groovin' High" features the intense tenor of Booker Ervin playing comparatively lighthearted bebop in a quintet with trumpeter Carmell Jones, pianist Gildo Mahones, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Alan Dawson. The other numbers ("The Second #2," "Bass-IX" and a brief "Stella By Starlight") match Ervin with the unbeatable trio of pianist Jaki Byard, Davis and Dawson. Although these performances are not quite classic, Booker Ervin fans will want this CD to round out their collection, for Ervin was at the peak of his powers during this era.

Dustygroove.com:
Booker Ervin's definitely grooving high here -- hitting some of the same soulful notes as on his classic Blues Book album, but also bringing in some more modernist moments too! The set features one track that's clearly a Blues Book number -- a take on "Groovin High" with Carmell Jones on trumpet and Gildo Mahones on piano -- but the rest of the album features a quartet that really lets Ervin dominate the proceedings on tenor -- blowing hard with that mix of deep roots and sharper edges he brought to his amazing work with Charles Mingus! Jaki Byard's on piano on these other tracks -- giving a nice sense of urgency to the set, as well as a similar range of jazz traditions in his sound -- and other players include Richard Davis on bass and Alan Dawson on drums -- both nicely loose one minute, then tight as a drum the next. Titles include "Stella By Starlight", "The Second #2", "Bass- Ix", and "Groovin' High".

Personnel:
Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone);
Carmell Jones (trumpet);
Jaki Byard, Gildo Mahones (piano);
Richard Davis (bass);
Alan Dawson (drums)

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 30, 1964.

Tracks:
1 The Second #2 (Ervin) 6:33
2 Groovin' High (Gillespie) 9:50

Have I Offended Someone?

Have I Offended Someone?
Frank Zappa
Amazon.com:
Although Zappa did not provide notes with the Offended? master tape, this compilation could be considered his idea of a "Best Of," and indeed, this collection features many of the tunes that first attracted legions of fans to his music. The aforementioned "Valley Girl," with vocals by daughter Moon Unit, was Zappa?s highest charting US single ever, reaching #32 in Billboard and earned Grammy nominations for Moon and FZ (his second), while the accompanying album, 1982?s Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch, reached #23. But despite the commercial acclaim of the single and album, Zappa?s ironic sensibilities were lost on the public and the media. Said Zappa in an interview with Josef Woodard, "The worst thing about that record is the fact that nobody really listened to it... The whole coverage of the song barely mentioned what the song was really saying, that these people are really airheads." Nevertheless, the song?s success triggered a movement of sorts, with "Valley Girl" T-shirts, lunch boxes, cosmetics, and offers for a TV series and a film (eventually made without Zappa?s participation). A few years earlier, Zappa?s 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti (which spawned the US hit "Dancin? Fool," a depiction of the male of the species in a disco frenzy) also contained two of his most razor-sharp and funny portrayals, "Jewish Princess" and "Bobby Brown Goes Down," both of which are included on Have I Offended Someone? Both songs sparked controversy. "Jewish Princess" brought a protest from the Anti-Defamation League of B?nai B?rith, who asked the FCC to ban it from radio airplay. Zappa said the song was satire, threatened to sue, and refused to apologize. He?s quoted in The Real Frank Zappa Book as saying, "...unlike The Unicorn, such creatures do exist?and deserve to be commemorated with their own special opus." "Bobby Brown Goes Down" is perhaps the oddest of Zappa?s successes. This colorful tale of a young man's encounter with a dyke named Freddie" would never get airplay in the US, but it reached the top ofthe charts in Norway and Austria, was Top Ten in Germany and remains a favorite in territories where English is not the primary language. Said Zappa to Matt Groening in a 1992 Guitar World interview, "I don?t think anything has outsold Sheik Yerbouti, partly because "Bobby Brown" keeps becoming a hit every ten years... I think it was back on the charts again in Norway. For no apparent reason, it was back." Have I Offended Someone? also contains two previously unreleased live versions of popular tunes: "Tinsel Town Rebellion," Zappa?s picture of music business execs and musicians joined in an insincere tango in Hollywood ("Did you know that in Tinsel Town the people there think substance is a bore/But if your New Wave group looks good they?ll hurry on back for more... But then again this system works as perfect as a dream/It works for all those record company pricks who come to skim the cream") and "Dumb All Over," Zappa?s scathing rap on televangelists, and one of the most remarkable performances included here.But Have I Offended Someone? is more than great music and humorous lyrics; this collection illuminates Frank Zappa?s fearlessness in dealing with "sensitive" subjects and underscores his courage in refusing to back down for fear of media, corporate, political or religious censorship or disapproval. His year-long campaign in the mid-80s fighting the PMRC and album rating stickers is well documented, particularly in the "Porn Wars" chapter of The Real Frank Zappa Book. His dedication to the cause of artistic liberty is examplified by his testimony before the Maryland State Legislature, which opened with these words: "It is my personal feeling that lyrics cannot harm anyone. There is no sound that you can make with your mouth, or word that will come out of your mouth, that is so powerful that it will make you go to hell."As Ed Sanders? liner notes for Offended? point out, "It is clear from my decades with the Fugs that there are oodles of humans out there who thirst for the lascivious chants of Have I Offended Someone?... I also know there will be oodles who will listen askance at this gathering of the Zappa legacy." The selections included here are bound to provoke negative reactions from many quarters?potentially offended parties being women, men, gays, jews, catholics, musicians, music business executives, the religious right and the French. It should be noted, however, that Zappa steadfastly defended freedom of speech for 30 years, persistently writing songs about sensitive (but truthful) issues, even in the face of attack and criticism ("rock" and otherwise).Oh yes, about "rock criticism." Zappa never shied away from saying what he really thought about rock critics. His most famous quote on the subject is included in the chapter entitled "Sticks & Stones" in The Real Frank Zappa Book; "Definition of rock journalism: People who can?t write, doing interviews with people who can?t think, in order to prepare articles for people who can?t read."

Dexter Gordon - More Than You Know (1975)

Dexter Gordon - More Than You Know (1975)

Dexter Gordon - More Than You Know (1975)
MP3 @320kbps - Covers - 137mb - Genre: Jazz

Allmusic.com:
Dexter Gordon's SteepleChase recordings of the early- to mid-'70s are among the most rewarding of his career. This particular session (which finds Gordon backed by a string orchestra arranged by Palle Mikkelborg) is one of the lesser items from this fertile period. Dexter is in memorable form on "Naima" and "More than You Know" but the backup orchestra has little interplay with Gordon and the lush charts offer few surprises. This set does not quite live up to its potential although Dexter Gordon fans will still find moments to enjoy.

Personnel: Dexter Gordon (vocals, tenor and soprano saxophone), Palle Mikkelborg (trumpet, arranger, conductor), Allan Botschinsky, Benny Rosenfeld, Idrees Sulieman (trumpet, flugelhorn), Vincent Nilsson, Richard Boone (trombone), Axel Windfeld (bass trombone), Preben Garnov (french horn), Bent Larson (flute), Erwin Jocobsen (oboe, english horn), Luba Boschenko (harp), Per Walther, Mogens Holm Larsen, Age Knudsen (violin), Bjarne Boie Rasmussen (viola), Erling Christensen (cello), Thomas Clausen (piano), Kenneth Knudsen (synthesizer), Ole Molin (guitar), Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass), Ed Thigpen, Alex Riel (drums) Klaus Nordsoe (congas, percussion).

Christina Aguielera - Back to basic_Live and Down under(2008)

DvDRip | 797 Mb | 192 Kbps - AC-3 ACM Codec| 672x368 | 1h35mn53s

Christina Aguilera:

One of the most accomplished performers of the last decade, Christina Aguilera has sold well over 25 million albums worldwide and cultivated a fan base that crosses generational, racial and gender lines. Now, segueing from the audacious sexuality of her second studio album, Stripped, the chameleon-like performer pays tribute to the music that has inspired her with her third studio album Back To Basics (RCA Records).Back To Basics has made Aguilera the biggest-seller in the SoundScan era for a female artist, passing Streisand's 2-CD "The Concert" release in '94. Her debut single, "Ain't No Other Man," off her double platinum album, was a huge success, along with her second single "Hurt," while her third single "Candyman" continues to climb the charts.Aguilera has garnered rave reviews for her current 41-city North American tour. The tour kicked off in Houston, Texas and has stopped in Los Angeles, Boston, Phoenix, Vancouver, Las Vegas and New York among others. The "Back to Basics" 2007 North American Tour features a unique stage design that allows Christina's fans unprecedented access to the stage with unbelievable sight lines as well as three distinct stage scenes, illuminated by more than 600 moving lights, and a state-of-the-art hydraulic system. Aguilera has assembled an acclaimed production team for her concert tour featuring choreographer and director, Jamie King (Madonna, Janet Jackson, Prince) and Roberto Cavalli, who is the tour's exclusive costume designer. Working together, the team created a modern inventive vision fused with elements of retro glamour.Aguilera's backstory is well-known. A native of Staten Island, the pre-teen began performing in local talent shows while growing up in Pennsylvania. In 1992, after appearing on "Star Search." She joined the cast of the Disney Channel's "The New Mickey Mouse Club." In 1998 Aguilera's song "Reflection" for Disney's Mulan led to a record deal with RCA and the release of her self-titled debut album in Summer, 1999. The album quickly hit #1 on the strength of its first dance/pop single, "Genie In A Bottle" (which dominated the charts for five weeks) and other chart toppers including "What A Girl Wants." It was a feat she would repeat the following year with Mi Reflejo, the smash Spanish-language version of her debut, followed by her hit holiday release, My Kind Of Christmas.In 2001 Aguilera joined forces with Pink, Mya and Lil' Kim on the smash "Lady Marmalade" single and video. That eye-popping slice of ear candy kept her front and center in the international spotlight even as she began, slowly and steadily, to lay the groundwork for her second album, Stripped. Released in October 2002, it sealed her status as an international superstar while transforming her previous squeaky-clean image into a fully sexualized woman with lots on her mind. Along with the superheated funk of the album's provocative debut single, "Dirrty," came such standout tracks as "Beautiful," "Can't Hold Us Down" and "Make Over."Earning her first of four Grammy Awards in 2000 for Best New Artist, her subsequent trophies came in 2001 for "Lady Marmalade" (Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals), in 2003 for "Beautiful" (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance) and in 2007 for "Ain't No Other Man (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance), winning a Grammy for each of her albums. Among countless other honors, she is also the recipient of a 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Mi Reflejo (Best Female Pop Vocal Album), a 2000 Billboard Music Award for Female Artist of the Year, and two 2004 Rolling Stone Music Awards (Best Female Performer, Readers' Pick; and Best Tour, Readers' Pick, "Justified and Stripped"). Voted Sexiest Teen Idol in a VH1 poll, Aguilera's beauty and charisma have also led Teen People to list her among its "25 Hottest Stars Under 25" and Maxim to crown her Best International Female Singer (2000), one of the Sexiest Women of the Year (2003) and #1 on their "Hot 100" List (2003). Aguilera has also been honored with two NRJ Awards (Best International Female, Best International Album) as well as a 2007 MTV Europe Award (Best Female Artist).Today, while devoting the lion's share of her time to recording and touring, the 26-year-old is active in a range of philanthropy. A major contributor to the fight against AIDS, Aguilera has participated in the "What's Going On?" cover project for AIDS Project Los Angeles' Artists Against AIDS. In 2004 she became the new face for MAC cosmetic company and spokesperson for the MAC AIDS Fund. More recently she became involved in awareness campaigns with Youth AIDS and ALDO. She also sponsors and is actively involved in the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh for battered women and children.

Chet Baker - Chet Baker And Crew (1956)

Chet Baker - Chet Baker And Crew (1956)

Chet Baker - Chet Baker And Crew (1956)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers + Scans ~ RS.com ~ 155mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Allmusic.com:
The numbers heard on Chet Baker & Crew were among a prolific flurry of recordings Baker was involved in during the last week of July 1956 ? fresh from an extended European stay. Sessions were held every day from the 23rd through the 31st, which resulted in such classic titles as The Route, Chet Baker Sings, and Chet Baker Quintet at the Forum ? which is also available under the title Young Chet ? as well as Chet Baker & Crew. The crew on these sides includes Phil Urso (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), Peter Littman (drums), and of course Baker (trumpet/vocals). Joining the combo on both the original as well as the alternate take of "To Mickey's Memory" and "Pawnee Junction" is Bill Loughbrough (chromatic tympani). His unmistakable percussive accents and tuned drum solos give these West Coast bop tracks uniquely Polynesian intonations. The band members take full advantage of their individual roles and abilities as soloists to really stretch out on "Slightly Above Moderate" and the Urso-credited composition "Halema" ? named after Baker's wife. The chemistry of cool that flows between Urso and Baker is perhaps at its finest during the seamless exchange heard on "Worryin' the Life Out of Me." Timmons also boasts notable contributions throughout. His playful and scampering style dresses up the bluesy "Lucius Lu" and "Line for Lyons," among others. The latter is also notable as it contains the sole Baker vocal on this set. Baker enthusiasts seeking companion tracks featuring the same lineup should likewise obtain the 1995 CD release Young Chet. Among the contents is the frenetic rendering of "Night on Bop Mountain." [The 1993 CD reissue of Chet Baker & Crew increases the original eight-song Pacific Jazz collection to include all 14 tracks completed during three sessions in late July 1956 at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles.]

Cduniverse.com:
This astounding live set was recorded with Chet Baker's regularly touring ensemble at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles in 1956, after the trumpeter's return from an extensive European tour. The group is incredibly in sync and agile on the many intricate arrangements. Of special note is the presence of percussionist Bill Loughbrough who contributes three performances on his unusual chromatic tympani, or "boobams," which are his own invention.

Baker is self-assured and in excellent form here, blowing many fine solos in his classic "cool" style. Tenor man Phil Urso and pianist Bobby Timmons are in equally good form, supporting Baker with flawless precision and taste. Baker's only vocal performance comes on the Gerry Mulligan original "Line For Lyons." Other notable cuts include Mulligan's "Revelation," the Latin-esque "To Mickey's Memory," and Al Cohn's swinging "Music to Dance By." Taken as a whole, this set is a nice snapshot of Baker in performance at the peak of his early popularity.

Personnel:
Chet Baker (trumpet)
Phil Urso (tenor sax)
Bobby Timmons (piano)
Jimmy Bond (bass)
Peter Littman (drums)
Bill Loughbrough (timpani)

Recorded at the Forum Theater, Los Angeles, California on July 24, 25 & 31, 1956. Includes original liner notes by Woody Woodward. Remastered.

Review:
(by Lyndsey Winship-02 November 2007)
When Leona Lewis slipped from the spotlight after last year's Christmas Number One, there were whispers that maybe she didn't have the x-factor after all. But in reality, Leona was one of the few people to come out of a TV talent show worth investing some time and money in. Not for her a rush-released covers album; instead it was off to the States to work with a host of big name producers like Dallas Austin and Jam and Lewis.
It's almost a shame all that effort went into crafting a bland pop album strong on mid-tempo balladry and spiralling vocal gyrations, but short on hooks, innovation and personality.
With sights firmly set on the lucrative American market, single ?Bleeding Love? is an 80s throwback that even Mariah wouldn't record these days. And the attempts at skittering r'n'b beats on tracks like "The Best You Never Had" and the Ne-Yo- produced "I'm You" are also fairly middle-of-the-road.
Elsewhere, "Take a Bow" is a slice of synthy melodrama, "Whatever it Takes" has singalong potential and big ballad "Footprints in the Sand" is a piano warbler that brings Leona's voice to the forefront. It's an amazing voice, no doubt, but if it wasn't for those elastic vocal cords, this could be anyone.
Only on the Leona co-written "Here I Am" do we get a glimpse of the Hackney girl herself, thrown into the pop machine: "This is a crazy world/These can be lonely days.../Who can you really trust" she asks. Otherwise, Spirit is just the sound of a generic diva.

Amazon.co.uk Review:
Leona Louise Lewis is something of an anomaly. Not only is she pretty and endowed with a wonderfully elastic (four-octave) vocal range--she?s also a committed vegetarian and one of the few X Factor/TV talent show winners not to immediately try to capitalise on her success with an album of weak covers. Instead, her mentor Simon Cowell (and team) have coaxed Lewis into the studio with some of America?s biggest talents--Dallas Austin, Jam & Lewis--and come up with an album of weak originals. You couldn?t exactly call "Spirit" a bad album. It carries memorable melodies, some classic song-writing and, of course, Lewis? seriously potent voice (she?s been compared to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey already). But what the album lacks is personality. Songs like "Bleeding Love" (produced by Ryan Tedder and Jesse McCartney) are technically flawless, but you?re left thinking ?is this all the sass and sparkle a bonafide Hackney gal can muster?? "The Best You Never Had", the Ne-Yo produced "I'm You" and many other songs here follow this play-it-safe formula, while the album?s ballads--"Footprints in the Sand", for example--are so bland even Whitney and Mariah would wince. Still, there?s no doubt Lewis is a real talent. Perhaps if she ditches the overpaid ?superstar? producers next time and makes the album she wants to make, we might finally hear some of her real ?spirit?. --Danny McKenna

Description:
2006 X-Factor winner Leona Lewis's long-awaited debut LP 'Spirit' comes nearly a year after her first single, 'A MomentLike This'. Preceded by 'Bleeding Love', this release sees Lewis collaborating with a wealth of different producers andwriters (as well as the ubiquitous Simon Cowell as executive producer) including Damon Dash and Ne-Yo. The sound rangesfrom slick R&B pop to power ballads, finding room as well for a delicate version of Ewan Macoll's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'. Lewis herself was heavily involved in the writing process, sharing credits on several of the songs on 'Spirit'.

ROSE TATTOO - Pain (2002)
Genre: ROCK | 1CD | MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps | 130 Mb | 5% RAR | RapidShare

Angry Anderson's voice is gritty and coated in whisky. This is music that is played in juke boxes at biker bars and have titles that the everyday Joe can relate to:
"Union Man", "Hard Rockin' Man", "Pain" and "One More Drink With The Boys" just to name a few here. ROSE TATTOO is a man's band here. No pretty boys are in this line up and their music is raw and very unpolished just like the band's look. Pain was the last Rose Tattoo album to feature Pete Well's before his death.

RAY CHARLES AND FRIENDS - SUPER HITS

RAY CHARLES AND FRIENDS - SUPER HITS

Amazon.com:
Most of the albums in the Super hits series of albums are greatest hits collections, but this is a straight re-issue of Ray's 1984 album of duets with country singers, originally titled Friendship. It was originally released on vinyl, then later on CD with the same artwork. That version of the CD was replaced by this album, but the title Super hits is very confusing. (More recently, the album has been re-issued again, this time with the original artwork and title but re-mastered and with two bonus tracks.)

It is fitting that Ray should have recorded this album - after all, he recorded R+B versions of country songs back in the sixties and took them high in the pop charts including I can't stop loving you, a number one in Britain and America. Those records didn't sound country, but twenty years later, here is Ray singing country and having a great time doing it.

The big hit here (a country number one) is Seven Spanish angels, the duet with Willie Nelson that closes the album. I love all the songs but I particularly like Who cares (with Janie Fricke, the only female singer featured), Two old cats like us (with Hank Williams Junior) and We didn't see a thing (with George Jones and Chet Atkins). Other guests include Johnny Cash, B J Thomas, Ricky Skaggs, Merle Haggard and the Oak ridge boys.

This is an upbeat country album that shows just how talented Ray Charles was - one of the few singers equally brilliant in several different genres of music.

Tracks:

01 - TWO OLD CATS LIKE US - RAY CHARLES / HANK WILLIAMS.JR
02 - THIS OLD HEART (IS GONNA RISE AGAIN) - RAY CHARLES / THE OAK RIDGE BOYS
03 - WE DIDN'T SEE A THING - RAY CHARLES / GEORGE JONES / CHET ATKINS
04 - WHO CARES - RAY CHARLES / JANIE FRICKIE
05 - ROCK & ROLL SHOES - RAY CHARLES / B.J.THOMAS
06 - FRIENDSHIP - RAY CHARLES / RICKY SKAGGS
07 - IT AN'T GONNA WORRY MY MIND - RAY CHARLES / RICHARD LEIGH
08 - LITTLE HOTEL ROOM - RAY CHARLES / MERLE HAGGARD
09 - CRAZY OLD SOLDIER - RAY CHARLES / JOHNNY CASH
10 - SEVEN SPANISH ANGELS - RAY CHARLES / WILLIE NELSON

Producers include: Keith Diamond, Johnathan Cain, Peter Bunetta, Rick Chundacoff, Michael Omartian.

Engineers include: Jan Mullaney, Steve Milo, Dana Jon Chappelle.

Recorded at Passion Studios, Connecticut; Wally World, California; The Record Plant, Hollywood, California; The Dugout, Nashville, Tennessee; Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, California.

Michael Bolton possesses numerous attributes inherent to a great recording artist--a grandiose voice able to be at once overwhelming and gentle, the vision to convey powerful emotional details with simple vocal inflections, the ability to set his songs in precise musical colors. But what is probably his most overlooked quality is also his greatest strength: The man is a tunesmith non-pareil. Not only is he a powerful songwriter in his own right (having written for everyone from Barbra Streisand to Kiss), but his knowledge and choice of cover songs borders on the omniscient. And they all become hits--the proof is on GREATEST HITS 1985-1995.

It was Bolton's renditions of soul classics that first gained him an audience. Zelma Redding, widow of the legendary Otis Redding, called Bolton's chart-topping take on "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" her "all-time favorite version," and his interpretation of "Georgia On My Mind" personifies the timeless elegance of modern pop. Yet his own compositions shine just as brightly: "Soul Provider" glides with a smoky, saloon feel, "How Can We Be Lovers" deftly communicates the complexities of relationships, and "Steel Bars" (co-written with Bob Dylan) moves with classic Bryan Adams-ish abandon.

GREATEST HITS also shows off Bolton's knack for nurturing hits out of current songwriters, and finding nuggets ripe for renewing. Among the latter is the remake of Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne's "A Love So Beautiful," a sweeping ballad on which Bolton pays homage to Orbison's unique tenor. Among the former are "When I'm Back On My Feet Again," "Time, Love And Tenderness" and "The River"--all by Diane Warren, all modern-day epics of the heart that place the fleeting, indescribable moments of love (and love lost) into exquisitely poetic pop statements.

Tracks:

(Sittin on) The dock of the bay (bysevretly)
A love so beautiful
can't touch there
Georgia in my mind
How am I supposed to live without you
How can we be lovers
I found someone
I promise you
Missing you now
Said I love you but I lied
Soul provider
Steel bars
That's what love is all about
This river
Time, love and tenderness
When a man loves a woman
When I'm back on my feet again

Anthony Gomes - Live (2008)

Anthony Gomes "Live"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 48000 Stereo | 59.16 | 149.56Mb
2008 | Genre: Blues | Rock | Pop | Songwriter

For some musicians, it all comes down to what happens on stage. Anthony Gomes burns with blazing vocals and incendiary guitar work throughout his new CD, 'Live' to be released February 19th, the first full-length concert release from a man who plays as many as 250 dates annually in North America and Europe.

Mining blues-rock, soul and gritty R&B styling for the past decade, Live is a summation of where Anthony?s been and also offers a glimpse of where he might be heading, too. The album finds him immersed in his element ? performing for an audience and making a connection. Certainly, Anthony enjoys the craft of the studio, but that passion and power truly rises to its greatest heights during his live performances.

?Some of my favorite artists and bands would release live albums to bookend a period and then move on to a new sound, a new journey,? Anthony says. ?I feel like this is a booking-ending of this sound and style for me as I look forward.?

Nominated Artist of the Year by Blueswax magazine 4 years in a row, winning one of those years, Gomes acclaim continues to grow as a songwriter and especially as a performer. While the original plan for a live album was to record a series of dates in Nashville, fate overtook the project when Anthony and his band lined up a test recording during a show at the Triple Door in Seattle, Washington on February 27, 2007. Listening back to the 90-minute performance, Anthony and his team realized they already had the live album they wanted. ?We just played, not thinking about the red light being on,? he says. ?There?s no studio trickery, this is it. We started to pass it on to some fans before releasing it an they all said it?s their favorite CD, ?this is the Anthony Gomes that we know, the person we see in a live show.??

?The album captures the essence about what happens between and artist and the audience, that energy you can?t capture in a studio,? he says. ?The show is a journey and within, there are great individual performances. It?s an organic, living, breathing document of that one night."

The set list includes a churning ?Music Is the Medicine? as Anthony works the crowd into a frenzy, while the funky and soulful ?Bluebird,? a highlight of the last studio release, soars even higher here, the interplay between guitar and keyboards capped by group vocals on the refrain. The explosive ?Testify? is so powerful, Anthony thinks it shreds his original studio track.

The album also features a cover of Led Zeppelin?s ?Heartbreaker,? both a challenge and a thrill for Anthony. ?It was intimidating, but also very natural, part of who I am,? he says. ?I played it in my first band in high school and grew up on that music, so it?s an extension of myself and it?s nice to pay respects to an act that influenced me as a musician and a songwriter.

On the new ?I Won?t Let You Down? Anthony thanks his greatest supporters throughout his career ? his parents. ?You want to make them proud of the man or woman you?ve become,? he says. ?They?ve given so much to raise you and you want to make sure you?re doing a good job in their eyes and live up to the legacy of your family.? Equally compelling is ?Wings of a Song,? which harkens back to Anthony?s lifelong mission statement that music can indeed change the world.

As Live ends one creative period for Anthony, he?s already looking ahead to the next chapters in his ever-continuing musical story as he prepares to unveil Anthony Gomes and the New Soul Cowboys, a song summit between blues, R&B and country too. Of course, his unofficial membership in the Nashville Muzik Mafia, which includes Big and Rich, Cowboy Troy and Anthony?s one-time backing singer Gretchen Wilson, should make it all the more colorful.

"I'm very well-received in Nashville, being a southern rock/blues musician and I've been laying down the groundwork for this new direction, being a roots player, too," Anthony says. "Yes, I'm a blues guy, but as I said on my first album, my blues is Technicolor." And the sound of Anthony Gomes has never been more widescreen, full of Hi-Def excitement, than on Live.

The Wrights - The Wrights EP (2008)

The Wrights "The Wrights EP"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 48000 Stereo | 25:39 | 63.37Mb
2008 | Genre: Country | Songwriter

8 Track mini-album follow up to their critically acclaimed 1st album release on ACR/RCA Records, "Down This Road." Tracks produced by Keith Stegall (Alan Jackson), John Kelton, and Paul Kennerley (Emmylou Harris). "The undeniable literacy within The Wrights' songwriting, and the pinpoint harmonies of this talented husband/wife duo, showcase what is truly pure about country music."
With one album to their name, the husband and wife duo consisting of Adam and Shannon Wright recently released a followup EP simply titled The Wrights on a label (ACR) owned by Adam?s uncle, Alan Jackson. It was music that brought the couple together over ten years ago and lead to love and now it?s love that inspires the music.

A couple yearn for the time when their relationship had seen better days, and in reflection, they wish they could go back in the opening track, ?Rewind.? The song features the alluring vocals of Shannon and the longing in her voice is evident every time she stretches out the title and sings ?Reeeeeewind? while Adam sings backup harmony.

The following song, ?Do You Still,? is the first of five on which the couple share songwriting credits. In the song, they seek affirmation from each other that they are still in love after being married for some time. The remarkably reserved vocals and production that highlight the songwriting, rather than outshine it, and along with the harmonies of the husband and wife, these attributes come to characterize the album and are?in part?due to the genius of Keith Steagall, who produced the first six tracks.

?Planting Flowers? finds a couple in an emotionally empty relationship devoid of communication. It?s one of the more brilliant tracks and truly shows off the songwriting prowess of The Wrights. Too often, a dying love is cause for a vindicative lover or an internal awakening of determination, but Shannon and Adam explore the frustrations of cultivating a relationship that is no longer emotionally rewarding, likening it to ?planting flowers on a gravel road.? Written by Alan Jackson and Roger Murrah, ?True Love? was accidentally discovered while choosing songs to include on the EP, and thank goodness it was. ?True Love? is a refreshing look at exactly what the title suggests and ignores the immature misconceptions of love that are so often thrown about in popular culture and country music today.

Paul Kennerley is the fourth person to leave a prominent imprint on this EP. He co-wrote ?A Love Like That,? ?You?re The Kind Of Trouble,? and ?You Were Made For Me? with the Wrights and he produced the latter two, which also close out the album. ?You Were Made For Me? seems to be the only blemish, albeit a small one, on a fine album. The lyrics are a little lighter than featured elsewhere, but even so, the couple still manage to exhibit a cool confidence and faithfulness in their relationship in which jealousy doesn?t play a role; they know that they were made for each other and nothing can come between them.

The Wrights? self-titled EP is a splendid and refreshing album with a focus on mature songwriting that doesn?t resort to banal love cliches. It?s a fine example of what country music can and should be. My one complaint is that it had to end after only eight songs.

Shannon Brown - A Tour Of My Heart (1998)

Shannon Brown "A Tour Of My Heart"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 48000 Stereo | 43:23 | 102Mb
1998 | Genre: Country

Shannon Brown grew up in Spirit Lake, Iowa, a resort town built along three natural lakes where her father, a guitarist-band leader, and mother owned several clubs and restaurants. She sang in choruses, show choirs and pageants but didn't consider a recording career until she was 17 when she began singing on karaoke nights every Thursday at her parents' club.

Brown moved to Nashville in 1994 and soon began singing songwriters' demos. For two years, she would work in Nashville for two weeks and then make the 15-hour drive to Iowa to begin a three-week tour and then return and start all over. She signed a record deal with the RCA Label Group in 1997, but she suffered from corporate restructuring at the company and no album was released.

"A Tour Of My Heart" is the debut album by Shannon Brown. The first single released was the amazing power track "I Won't Lie" an amazing song that showed Shannon's incredible vocal range. The album was completed on RCA Label Group in 1998, but was never released due to poor airplay of the first single.

The Gougers - A Long Day For The Weatervane (2007)

The Gougers "A Long Day For The Weathervane"
MP3 | CBR 224 Kbps 48000 Stereo | 42:26 | 73.06Mb
2007 | Genre: Country | Songwriter | Folk | Rock | Americana

For members of The Gougers, who each sport a tattoo of the band's bird-and-broken-heart logo, it is more important that audiences hear the artful and profound lyrics of the songs created by the team of singer-writer-instrumentalists Shane Walker and Jamie Wilson - vivid imagery of human lives, subtle social comment, truth - than be concerned with what sort of genre the band's music fits into.

That's because The Gougers' sound takes in most genres, constantly moving in and out of country, rock, folk, roots, or mixing them up, as Walker and Wilson experiment and evolve as songwriters whose words stay with listeners and make them think. Dreamy ballad, up-tempo urban anthem: They're playing with rhythm and instrumental effects, too, along the lines of influences and music mavericks Ryan Adams, Emmylou Harris and Bright Eyes and premier musical partners David Rawlings and Gillian Welch.

Formerly as The Sidehill Gougers, the four-piece Americana band contributed to such albums as Palo Duro Records', Texas Unplugged: Vol. 2 (2006) - an example of the neo-traditional porch-and-parlor, mandolin-and-fiddle facet of its music, the tender "One Tiny Sin" - and recorded Runaway Scrape (2003), the band's debut CD, and an EP, Gone To Seed (2005), a harmonic and graceful collection of seven songs that intrigued fans and continue to mesmerize them.

Now the Sidehill has been dropped, a drummer has been added, and there's been a switch to electric guitar and bass. The outstanding vocals of Walker and Wilson wrap around a ringing guitar, sometimes a laidback one, a drum riff, echoes or reverb - and always a great lyric. Take, for instance, "Old Crow/Scarecrow," which talks about boozing and ends with appropriate suddenness. Five songs on Gone to Seed were re-recorded for Weathervane, songs fans can't get enough of, like "John Henry" and "It'll Get Better," which Walker and Wilson wrote via text messages and voice mail.

The Gougers are Shane Walker on vocals, guitar and harmonica; Jamie Wilson on vocals and acoustic guitar; Cody Foote on electric and upright bass; and John Ross Silva on drums and percussion, who kept his talents secret while he mastered the recording and then joined the band as it tours from Houston to Oklahoma City. Silva (with engineering credits for Dixie Chicks, Shawn Colvin, John Alagia and Lloyd Maines) had been a friend of the band and its incarnations for years, and it was he who brought in country-rocker-producer Keith Gattis, who oversaw the production.

The two Texas songwriters teamed up this way: Walker, the deep singer-songwriter who played drums and piano by age 4 (and later guitar), heard Wilson singing harmony in a cantina in College Station where together they attended Texas A&M and was blown away. Both had grown up in small towns (he from Crawford, she from Sealy) listening to good country music and soaking up influences from Bob Wills and Johnny Cash to Bruce Springsteen, both of their fathers, and even writer/philosopher Joseph Campbell. Walker was also absorbing the songwriting skills of high-caliber pistols the likes of Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt.

When the four put their talented heads together, what results is an eclectic blend of new music and lyrics refined to the basics - as stark yet as loaded with meaning as the band's logo and band members' tattoos: a crying bird ready to fly from its perch atop a broken heart.

Sass Jordan - Rats (1994)

Sass Jordan "Rats"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 48000 Stereo | 42:27 | 104.57Mb
1994 | Genre: Rock | Songwriter

Sass Jordan's third album continues in the vein begun on Racine; this is roots rock with teeth. "High Road Easy" received considerable radio airplay, and the other rockers on the album are similar-catchy with an edge, showcasing Jordan's gut-deep voice.

As on Racine, the up-tempo stuff works the best: "Damaged", "High Road Easy", "Ugly" (featuring a guest appearance from George Clinton), "Honey", and "Wish". Of the slower songs, "I'm Not" and "Give" are excellent, though "Breakin'" is an acquired taste. Jordan's got way more attitude and a much stronger voice than most singer-songwriters, and both are shown to their best advantage on Rats.

James Moors - Hush (2007)

James Moors "Hush"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 48000 Stereo | 39:10 | 96.62Mb
2007 | Genre: Folk | Alt Country | Soft Rock | Songwriter

Young and old souls alike have no trouble finding themselves in the plain spoken lyrics of James Moors. After bringing an audience into the present moment with his midwestern sincerity and ungaurded humor, James unveils the layers of our common experiences to expose the magic that lies beneath them. Often compared to such luminaries as Greg Brown, Peter Himmelman and John Hiatt, James paints the landscapes we live in.

"Hearing Shawn Colvins' - Live 88 on a frigid late night drive through northern Minnesota, warmed me from the inside." That's how Moors remembers being bit by the songwriting bug. Performing under the stage name of Sterling Waters (the name that Moors took after his brother went missing in the Colorado Rockies in the mid-90's), James began criss crossing the country in 2000. He has released three CDs under the Sterling Waters moniker and has had the good fortune to share the stage with Chris Smither, Richard Shindell, Willy Porter, Peter Case and many others. In 2001 James was awarded the emerging artist grant from the McKnight Foundation which funded his most recent Sterling Waters recording, Let it Go, in 2002.

In an effort to live more presently and simplify his life a bit James has shed the stage name and relishes the new begining. Now a family man with two young girls, carefree travels have given way to a path with a deeper purpose and Moors' songwriting has been a major beneficiary. With the release of his CD, Hush, James Moors entices the inner cynic out of the shadows to bask in the glow of the present moment.

Hush boasts performances from Lisa Germano (Bowie, Neil Finn, U2), Marc Perlman (Jayhawks, Golden Smog) and Ben Wisch (David Wilcox, Marc Cohn). Produced in part by Canada's secret weapon, Danny Michel, Hush promises something deeper from the inner world and delivers it through intimate performances and well crafted songwriting. RIP Sterling Waters and welcome to James Moors.

Jim Brickman - Valentine (2008)

Jim Brickman "Valentine"
MP3 | CBR 320 Kbps 48000 Stereo | 44:42 | 106.67Mb
2008 | Genre: Jazz | Pop | New Age | Instrumental

Valentine's is Jim Brickman's red-letter day. As a master at conjuring sonic romance, the platinum-selling pianist/composer/ producer has truly made Feb. 14 his signature holiday.

The AC/new age hitmaker's 17th CD features 12 intimate morsels, including fresh instrumental takes on familiar songs (a sensuous sax-styled mix of 1997 cross-format top five single "Valentine" and rumba-lite "Escape") and recast vocal tracks (the tender "You," now with Tara MacLean; 2007 AC hit "Never Alone," featuring Lady Antebellum; and reignited "Destiny" with Jaci Velasquez).

Other highlights: rhapsodic "To Hear You Love Me" with hand-picked touring mate Jake Simpson and elegant instrumental "Sacred Moment," inspired by Bach. As he opens his 14th year as a chart presence in what has become a bulk chocolate domain, Brickman maintains his rep as the Godiva of the genre.

Booker Ervin - Structurally Sound (1966)

Booker Ervin - Structurally Sound (1966)

Booker Ervin - Structurally Sound (1966)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Cover Scans ~ RS.com ~ 148mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Amazon.com:
The double meaning of the word "sound" in this title references both the phenomenon of sound and, particularly, Booker Ervin's durability. When Ervin convened this quintet in December 1966, he'd had a string of critically acclaimed (and extraordinarily creative) albums on Prestige (case in point: The Space Book). But real success, even by jazz standards, didn't propel Ervin to the heights where he belonged. His tenor saxophone, deeply entwined with the Texas tradition, had breadth that hit with the force of Coltrane and a tonal control that allowed him to aerate his playing beautifully. Here he does just this on both quick-paced tunes, such as trumpeter Charles Tolliver's "Franess," and on the band's evocative take on Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments." A young John Hicks lays down the piano in colorfully bright hues, and Tolliver and Ervin are off. They play riveting hard bop that should be part of any jazz collection. After all, Ervin was one of Mingus's faves, and we know what discerning tastes Charles had.

Allmusic.com:

Mixing the dusky romanticism of Dexter Gordon and the progressive tonal ideology of John Coltrane, Booker Ervin is often filed under "A" for amalgam alongside other overlooked tenor masters such as Tina Brooks and Hank Mobley. Structurally Sound is perhaps not Ervin's most provocative album, but a solid and tasty endeavor featuring the "suspended" chord sounds popularized by McCoy Tyner during the late '60s. Here, the chords come via the brilliant pianist John Hicks, who opens the album with funky high-end triplet figures on Randy Weston's "Berkshire Blues." Joining in is a well-selected roster of musicians, many of whom were also overshadowed by their more well-known contemporaries, including Charles Tolliver on trumpet, Red Mitchell on bass, and Lenny McBrowne on drums. Tolliver contributes the original composition "Franess," a Wayne Shorter-influenced affair that features his fat and burnished tone. They also cover Oliver Nelson's blissful standard "Stolen Moments" to good effect. Originally ending with an athletic up-tempo version of "Take the 'A' Train," the Blue Note Connoisseur Series reissue includes a sparkling "Shiny Stockings," featuring an especially inspired chorus by Ervin. An oddball version of "White Christmas" also makes it onto the disc, as do alternate takes of "Franess" and "Deep Night."

Personnel:
Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone);
Charles Tolliver (trumpet);
John Hicks (piano);
Red Mitchell (bass);
Lenny McBrowne (drums)

Barney Kessel - Feeling Free (1969)

Barney Kessel - Feeling Free (1969)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 101mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz / bop, cool

Allmusic.com:
Guitarist Barney Kessel recorded regularly for the Contemporary label during 1953-1961, one gem after another. In 1969 he returned to Lester Koenig's label for this lone effort, a quartet set with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Chuck Domanico, and drummer Elvin Jones. The music is fairly free, particularly Kessel's four originals (which include "Blues, Up, Down & All Around" and "Two Note Samba"). Even Paul Simon's "The Sounds of Silence" and "This Guy's in Love With You" are turned into reasonably creative jazz by the all-star group. Although none of the musicians was associated exclusively with the avant-garde (Elvin Jones came the closest but never quite embraced free jazz), they show the influence of the explorations of the era, using aspects of the innovations as a logical way to stretch the jazz mainstream. Fascinating music.

Worldsrecords.com:
The freedom that Barney Kessel felt when he made this recording in 1969 was inspired from within and from outside. Kessel had looked deep inside himself and decided that the life of a studio musician was no longer for him. Feeling Free marked his exit from Hollywood security back into the risks and satisfactions of the jazz life. It was a good time for a veteran like Kessel to absorb some of the changes blowing through jazz in the wakes of Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. Who better to stimulate him in his search than Coltrane's drummer, the explosive and infinitely flexible Elvin Jones? With Jones, the adventurous young vibraharpist Bobby Hutcherson, and the forceful bassist Chuck Domanico, Kessel managed to loosen and expand his playing without sacrificing anything of his admired discipline and musicianship.

Personnel:
Barney Kessell, guitar
Bobby Hutcherson, vibraharp
Chuck Domanico, bass
Elvin Jones, drums

Dexter Gordon - More Than You Know (1975)
MP3 | 320kbps | Covers | 137mb | RS.com | 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Bobby Hutcherson - Happenings (1966)

Bobby Hutcherson - Happenings (1966)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers + Scans ~ RS.com ~ 108mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Genre: Jazz

Cduniverse.com:
HAPPENINGS was vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's fourth Blue Note release as a leader. Where its predecessors DIALOGUE and COMPONENTS were packed with challenging avant-bop, HAPPENINGS instead brings things down a notch. With pianist Herbie Hancock, drummer Joe Chambers, and bassist Bob Cranshaw on board, Hutcherson keeps the tone fairly light, performing his original compositions (the exception is Hancock's "Maiden Voyage") with a mellow, swinging style that emphasizes modal exploration. The performances are all top-notch, and the album still weighs in as one of the best in Hutcherson's fine catalogue.

Allmusic.com:
Bobby Hutcherson's first quartet outing, Happenings, casts the brightest spotlight on the vibraphonist's soloing abilities, matching him once again with pianist Herbie Hancock (who is also heavily featured) and drummer Joe Chambers, plus bassist Bob Cranshaw. For that matter, the album also leans heavily on Hutcherson's compositional skills; save for Hancock's "Maiden Voyage," six of the seven numbers are Hutcherson originals. Given his reputation as a modernist, most of the pieces here are structured pretty simply ? there's a lot of straightforward modal hard bop, giving Hutcherson and Hancock plenty of room to solo. They handle much of the material with a light, mellow touch, trading off meditative licks even on the more up-tempo pieces and poignant, lyrical lines on the ballads "Bouquet" and "When You Are Near." The two exceptions are the opening and closing numbers: "Aquarian Moon" is challenging post-bop, while the sinister "The Omen" finds Hutcherson opening up the bag of tricks he learned from the freely structured group dialogues Chambers wrote for albums past. Sharp stabs from the piano signal transition to a new, sometimes unaccompanied lead instrument, and Hutcherson's darting marimba lines build up a claustrophobic tension. That doesn't change the overall feel of the album, though, which ends up a charmingly relaxed, low-key outing and a nice addition to Hutcherson's Blue Note catalog.

Personnel:
Bobby Hutcherson (vibes, marimba),
Herbie Hancock (p),
Bob Cranshaw (b),
Joe Chambers (d)

Amazon.com essential recording
On their 1967 debut album, the Doors more than fulfilled the promise of their infamously challenging gigs around Los Angeles throughout the previous year. Whether belting out a standard like "Back Door Man" or talk-singing such originals as "The Crystal Ship" and "I Looked at You," leather-clad vocalist Jim Morrison exuded both sensuality and menace. The mixture, on the outsize album finale, "The End," helped rewrite the rules on rock song composition. None of this would have worked, though, were it not for the highly visual instrumental work of keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robbie Krieger, and drummer John Densmore, whose work on tracks such as "Take It As It Comes" and the lengthy hit "Light My Fire" virtually defined the rock-blues-jazz-classical amalgam that was acid-rock. --Billy Altman
