Jazz / Fusion / Jazz-Funk

The creative vision of Miles Davis was at its most mercurial in the late '60s and early '70s. He advanced the language of jazz (and pop) not just ... Full Descriptionwith each album, but practically with each gig. A perfect case in point is this live two-disc set. LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST is like manna from heaven for Miles fans, its nine cuts all previously unreleased performances from a formation of Miles's band that didn't stabilize long enough for a studio release. A considerably different version of this band had recorded the groundbreaking BITCHES BREW not much more than six months before this Fillmore appearance, but the record released as AT THE FILLMORE in 1971, featured yet another incarnation, sans Wayne Shorter, whose last gig with Miles is captured here.

Accordingly, this release finds Davis and cohorts in transition between the abstract jazz-rock of BITCHES BREW and the funkified, modal jams of subsequent recordings. The two sets documented here draw largely from BITCHES BREW, but the variations just a few months down the line are startling. Chick Corea's ring-modulated electric piano creates a Stockhausen-like maelstrom of sound, while Shorter plays some of the most daring, freewheeling solos of his career. Dave Holland splits the difference between funk, rock, and jazz, joining with Jack DeJohnette's roiling drums to forge a tumbling sonic carnival ride. The entire band blazes through every tune working on all cylinders, making a monstrously joyful noise by which the rest of us are still edified, even decades after the fact.

Recorded at The Fillmore East, New York, New York on March 7, 1970.

Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Dave Holland (acoustic & electric basses); Chick Corea (Fender Rhodes piano); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion).

The Troggs - Archeology (1966-1976) [2CD Box, 1992]

The Troggs - Archeology (1966-1976)
WV+CUE+LOG or MP3 CBR 320 | 142:07 min | 755 or 325 MB
UK Classic Beat and Garage Rock / 2CD issue, Polygram 1992

A double-CD, 52-track box set that proves there was a lot more to The Troggs than "Wild Thing" and "Love Is All Around". This archetypally primitive British Invasion quartet scored many hits in the U.K. that barely dented the charts in the U.S., like "With A Girl Like You", "Night Of The Long Grass", and the notoriously racy "I Can't Control Myself". They're all here, along with notable album cuts, B-sides, and worldwide post-1968 flops. Primitive they may have been, but The Troggs -- who wrote most of their own material -- did not lack a flair for hard pop hooks, and could display a surprising delicacy in their ballads. Several of their obscure singles and album tracks are equal in worth to their hits, like the gothic but pretty "Cousin Jane", and the witty light psychedelia of "Maybe the Madman" and "Purple Shades". Some of the '70s hard rockers and glammish novelties are unimpressive, and 52 songs is arguably excessive. But there are a fair number of obscure gems to be found on this well-annotated package.

UK only 180 gram vinyl pressing. For younger generations of musicians, having their song cut by Johnny Cash must be a little like scaling the Washington Monument. On his third album for producer Rick Rubin's American label, Cash makes Tom Petty's 'I Won't Back Down sound like a companion classic to 'I Walk the Line'. He transforms U2's 'One' into a sturdy testament of plainspoken faith, while he plumbs the netherworld of Nick Cave's 'The Mercy Seat' and Will Oldham's 'I See a Darkness'. Amid more familiar fare (including Neil Diamond's title track), the album's sing-along standout is the deadpan, down-and-out, talking blues of 'Nobody'. Cash's recent originals have the age-old purity of Appalachian music, while the traditional closing of 'Wayfaring Stranger' offers bittersweet benediction. Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, and June Carter Cash provide vocal cameos. Rhino UK. 2006.

Matt Monro (1 December 1930 – 7 February 1985) was an English singer who became one of the most popular entertainers on the international music scene during the 1960s. Throughout his 30-year career, he filled cabarets, nightclubs, music halls, and stadiums in Australia, Japan, the Philippines, and Hong Kong to Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. He sold more than 100 million records during his lifetime. He was born Terence Edward Parsons in Shoreditch, London and attended the Elliott School in Putney. Frank Zappa - Apostrophe [Ryko AU20 Gold]

Frank Zappa - Apostrophe [Ryko AU20 Gold]
Rock | Lossless APE | 1974 | Log&Cue | EAC | RS & MU | 200MB

The musically similar follow-up to the commercial breakthrough of Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe became Frank Zappa's second gold and only Top Ten album with the help of the "doggy wee-wee" jokes of "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow," Zappa's first chart single (a longer, edited version that used portions of other songs on the LP). The first half of the album is full of nonsensical shaggy-dog story songs that segue into one another without seeming to finish themselves first; their dirty jokes are generally more subtle and veiled than the more notorious cuts on Over-Nite Sensation. The second half contains the instrumental title cut, featuring Jack Bruce on bass; "Uncle Remus," an update of Zappa's critique of racial discord on "Trouble Every Day"; and a return to the album's earlier silliness in "Stink-Foot." Apostrophe has the narrative feel of a concept album, but aside from its willful absurdity, the concept is difficult to decipher; even so, that doesn't detract from its entertainment value.

This is the Ryko Au20 Gold audiophile CD released in 1996.

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home [SACD rip in 24-bit/96kHz]

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home [Hybrid SACD]
Hybrid SACD Columbia 512353 6 / Mastered by Greg Calbi
SACD rip in 24-bit/96kHz | FLAC | m3u, cue & Log | full Scans in 300 dpi
~1.1gb incl. recovery | RS & Enterupload | 1965/2003 | Folk; Folk-Rock

Bringing It All Back Home is Bob Dylan's fifth studio album, released in 1965 by Columbia Records.

The album is divided into an electric and an acoustic side. On side one of the original LP, Dylan is backed by an electric rock and roll band - a move that further alienated him from some of his former peers in the folk song community. Likewise, on the acoustic second side of the album, he distanced himself from the protest songs with which he had become closely identified (such "Blowin' in the Wind" and A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall"), as his lyrics continued their trend toward the abstract and personal.

Bringing It All Back Home is often cited as the birth of folk-rock, and one of the peak albums of Dylan's career.

The album reached #6 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, the first of Dylan's LPs to break into the US top 10. It also topped the UK charts later that Spring. The lead-off track, "Subterranean Homesick Blues", became Dylan's first single to chart in the US, peaking at #39.

With Another Side of Bob Dylan, Dylan had begun pushing past folk, and with Bringing It All Back Home, he exploded the boundaries, producing an album of boundless imagination and skill. And it's not just that he went electric, either, rocking hard on "Subterranean Homesick Blues," "Maggie's Farm," and "Outlaw Blues"; it's that he's exploding with imagination throughout the record. After all, the music on its second side -- the nominal folk songs -- derive from the same vantage point as the rockers, leaving traditional folk concerns behind and delving deep into the personal. And this isn't just introspection, either, since the surreal paranoia on "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" and the whimsical poetry of "Mr. Tambourine Man" are individual, yet not personal. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, really, as he writes uncommonly beautiful love songs ("She Belongs to Me," "Love Minus Zero/No Limit") that sit alongside uncommonly funny fantasias ("On the Road Again," "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"). This is the point where Dylan eclipses any conventional sense of folk and rewrites the rules of rock, making it safe for personal expression and poetry, not only making words mean as much as the music, but making the music an extension of the words. A truly remarkable album. AMG

Bob Dylan - Planet Waves [Hybrid CD/SACD Sony DSD Original Recording Remastered 2003]

Bob Dylan - Planet Waves
Hybrid CD/SACD Sony DSD Original Recording Remastered 2003
Eac Flac | Log + Cue | HQ Scans | ~273 Mb | RS
Original 1974 | 36:47 min | Classic Rock

Usually a label's remastering project is an attempt to get fans to shell out the bucks one more time, but Columbia's new Dylan cds are a different proposition. In particular, "Planet Waves" is like a whole new album. I never realized how warm and relaxed Dylan's vocals are, how tight The Band locks in behind him, how perfect Richard Manuel's and Garth Hudson's piano and organ accompaniment are. This remastered version is light years better than the original, and the songs aren't too shabby either. The whole gambit of moods is explored here, from the urgent rock of "Tough Mama" through the tender prayer of "Forever Young" to the aching confusion of "Wedding Song". At the time he recorded this, Dylan was a man in conflict between his love of settled family life and his desire to hit the road again, and this album captures his dilemma perfectly. "Planet Waves" could be his most underrated album. Amazon

About Sony DSD remastering:In view that DSD and PCM are conceptually different, it is not possible to make a direct comparison between the two. However, an actual physical analysis shows that DSD is comparable in signal quality to a PCM format having a bit depth of 20-bits and a sampling frequency of 192kHz. PCM does not provide anywhere near the same high sampling rate of 2.82MHz as with Direct Stream Digital recording. This exceptional high sampling rate leads to a digital representation that is remarkably close to the analog waveform.

Pachelbel's Greatest Hit: The Ultimate Canon (2003)

Pachelbel's Greatest Hit: The Ultimate Canon (2003)
Classical | mp3 | 320 kbps | 169.4 MB

Editorial Review:

All Music Guide
Pachelbel's Greatest Hit is an expansion of an earlier RCA Gold Seal staple of the same name (released as RCA Gold Seal 60712-2-RG). Whereas that package was rather stingily limited to only eight tracks, here you get Johann Pachelbel's only contribution to the standard repertoire in no less than 15 versions, all different from one another. This disc seemingly includes everything that was on the earlier disc except in that the "regular" Pachelbel Canon included is a digital recording by the artist and ensemble that initially popularized it on records (Jean-François Paillard) rather than a recording by Ettore Stratta with a pick-up ensemble. Among the new recordings of the famous Canon in D offered here is guitarist Clive Carroll's own solo arrangement, the duo pianists Peerless 2x2 performing Denes Agay's four-hand version, a rendition played on traditional Japanese instruments and Arthur Fiedler's lickety-split 1940 recording with his own Sinfonietta, the first ever made of Pachelbel's piece. Whether you have the patience to sit through all of these incarnations of the same work is up to the taste of the individual listener, and although it was shorter in content, the same held true of the original Gold Seal issue. Consider this, then, the "deluxe" edition of Pachelbel's Greatest Hit -- if you have the old one, you may not need it. But even if you love Pachelbel's Canon in D, this may still be more than you bargained for. -- Uncle Dave Lewis

Released in 2001 on the Hip-O label but now out of print, Beautiful Soul compiles Dusty Springfield's recordings for the Dunhill label, which include her entire 1973 album, Cameo, and the majority of tracks from her 1974 album, Longing, which was never officially released.

All Music Guide: Hip-O's Beautiful Soul: The ABC/Dunhill Collection is an exhaustive retrospective of Dusty Springfield's early '70s stint at Dunhill Records, containing the entirety of the 1973 Cameo album, plus all the completed material from the unreleased 1974 album, Longing. After she signed to Dunhill in 1972, Springfield relocated to California to cut the material, and appropriately these are Californian productions of their time, filled with studio pros (Larry Carlton, Hal Blaine, Bernard Purdie, Joe Venuto), a warm lush production, and soft rock, written by such songwriters as Alan O'Day, David Gates, Melissa Manchester, and Ashford and Simpson. In other words, this is not the Dusty of Dusty in Memphis and A Brand New Me, although a cover of Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey" has an appropriate Southern flair and Ashford & Simpson's "I Just Wanna Be There" is smoothly seductive. All this means that some fans will not warm to this and, admittedly, some of the music is a little slight, but it works on two different levels. First, it's simply a good pop artifact, evoking its era with high-class performances and classy productions, appealing to the kind of listener that finds "Learn to Say Goodbye"'s status as the theme from the ABC Movie of the Week Say Goodbye, Maggie Cole to be a virtue. More importantly, this finds Springfield exploring more adventurous material, particularly on Longing, where she tackles Janis Ian's "In the Winter" and Margie Adam's lesbian love song, "Beautiful Soul." Therefore, this compilation winds up being as a historical exercise, both for Springfield diehards and early-'70s fanatics, but it'll please both camps equally, since they'll both find its flaws somewhat charming.

The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies [Velvel Records DSD Remastered Hybrid CD\SACD 2004]

The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies
Velvel Records DSD Remastered Hybrid CD\SACD 2004
Eac Flac | Log + Cue | HQ Scans | ~335 Mb | RS
Original 1971 | Bonus Tracks | 51:44 min | British Rock

"'Muswell Hillbillies' (Stereo Review's album of the year in 1972), is almost startling in its newly-revealed clarity. Revered by Kinks fans for its memorable songs and roots & blues stylings, 'Muswell Hillbillies' has been lamented by audiophiles for a somewhat muddy reproduction over the years. For the first time, both the SACD and standard CD layers of this hybrid disc allow you to hear the album the way it must have sounded to Ray and Dave in the studio -- a seemingly simple masterpiece actually built with intricate layers of acoustic, slide and electric guitars and breathtaking vocal harmonies." Bob Dylan - Desire [Hybrid CD/SACD Sony DSD Original Recording Remastered 2003]

Bob Dylan - Desire
Hybrid CD/SACD Sony DSD Original Recording Remastered 2003
Eac Flac (tracks) | Log + Cue | HQ Scans | ~403 Mb | RS
Original 1976 | 56:13 min | Classic Rock

There's something to be said for Desire's rambling, sprawling character, which has a charm of its own. There are some masterpieces here:"Hurricane" is the best-known, but the effervescent "Mozambique" is Dylan at his breeziest, "Sara" at his most nakedly emotional, and "Isis" is one of his very best songs of the '70s, a hypnotic, contemporized spin on a classic fable. AMG

Allmusic.com rating: 5 out of 5! Review!!

It is almost impossible to imagine a world without A Love Supreme having been made, and it is equally impossible to imagine any jazz collection without it. - Jack LV Isles/AMG

A Love Supreme is a jazz album recorded by John Coltrane's quartet on December 9, 1964 at the Van Gelder studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The album is a four-part suite, broken up into tracks: "Acknowledgement" (which contains the famous mantra that gave the suite its name), "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". It is intended to be a spiritual album, broadly representative of a personal struggle for purity. The final track corresponds to the wording of a devotional poem Coltrane included in the liner notes.

A Love Supreme is usually listed amongst the greatest jazz albums of all time. In a 2005 survey conducted by British television's Channel 4, to find the 100 best albums of all time, it was voted in at eighty-second. It was also ranked 47th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and is listed as one of the top five greatest albums of all time on Rate Your Music's. The elements of harmonic freedom heard on this album indicated the changes to come in Coltrane's music.

Crosby, Stills And Nash - Demos (2009)

Crosby, Stills And Nash - Demos (2009)
2009 | Folk | MP3 | 256 kbps/44 khz | Covers | 77 Mb

After four decades as "three together," the creative partnership of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash is one of the most enduring and influential in contemporary music. This compilation of previously unreleased material takes an unprecedented look at the earliest days of their collaboration with 12 demos from 1968 to 1971 - destined-to-be-classic songs that would later be featured on CSN's studio albums and solo titles. While a number of demos feature members performing solo (and one finds them joined by Neil Young), the set opens with the trio harmonizing on "Marrakesh Express," recorded four months before their self-titled debut LP was released in 1969. Other rarities include seminal takes on "Almost Cut My Hair," "Chicago," "Long Time Gone," "Love The One You're with," and "Deja Vu."
